You can also pull a spark plug and thread a length of nylon rope down into the combustion chamber, blocking the piston from reaching TDC. That's a pretty handy trick to have out on the road.
Just to throw it out here, the primary locking bar for my '79 FXE is 1/4" thick x 1-1/4" wide x 9.0" long. Crankshaft and clutch hub centerlines are approximately 13" apart. Of course, that info's useless for the modern bikes but I figure someone might wander through looking for Shovelhead dimensions.

Going to check compensator nut this weekend and don't have the locking tool, I've seen and read about ways around this but I can't find it in the forum. anybody used an alternative method that worked OK? Thanks, Tim
Best thing I have found is a Hockey Puck. They are rigid enough to hold and soft enough not to do any damage. Plus free because son is a Goalie and always has some in his bag.
