I have an 05 UC under extended warranty. It uses 1/2 qt oil evey 1k miles. My plugs fowled out. According to the plug reading charts I have bad valve seals.
For those of you that had to get your valve seals replaced, did the dealer give you the run around. I kept the fowled out plugs to show the dealer when I take it in for repair? I live in Oklahoma City and plan on taking it to Brian HD. Any advice? Thanks
That is a lotta oil. They may try to tell you it is normal but you should not have a problem with the extended warranty. In fact it is often easier to get something repaired under extended warranty than it is under the 2 year manufactures warranty.Tell them you are not quite sure what is causing the problem whether it is rings, valves, guides or whatever. That way they will probably replace everything.
I brought my bike into the dealer in November 06, 25,000 miles, for service and to check cam chain tensioners. They called me and asked if I had been using oil. They found plugs starting to foul, so they redid the valves and the cam chain tensioners under warranty.
Mack, it's not quite thateasy, but you are right extended is easier to work with but they will not replace everything. Take it to a dealer and tell them your situation. The dealer can completea simple leak down and compression test to determine the condition of valves, pistonrings and bore. If it passes these test itis valve seals. I have done several, no hassle whatsover from extended service. $50.00 deductible, they will not pay for fluid change however I recommend it.
My 05 EGC was using some oil, lacked power and pinging on acceleration. I took it to my selling dealer more than once complaining of these problems. They seamed to be more concerned to be more concerned with what HD would not allow them to do than making a customer who bought a bike from them happy. MyHarley experience was very disappointing at this point. (first Harley)
Last spring I decided to try a larger dealer in my area, Gulf Coast Harley Davison. My bike would soon be out of warranty and I thought I'd give it one last try to get it fixed. I had low expectations after my previous experiences.
My concerns were; Bad pinging on accel.. Major engine vibration and valve train tapping after warm-up.
Dropped off on Sunday and gota call on Wednesday saying it was fixed. They replaced the front motor mount and removed the heads, replaced the valve stem seals and resurfaced the valves.
I could not believe the ride home. It ran stronger than new, with no pinging or tapping and the vibration was back to the same as when new. I am very satisfied with their work and how fast I got it back. Gulf Coast Harley in New Port Richie Florida is great! I wish I had bought my bike from them! They also restored my faith in Harley motorcycles!
Yes, I had the same problem. My plugs would foul every 5K miles. I took the bike to 4 different dealars. They all gave me the run around.... normal, changing plugs is cheap... they all do that... etc. The compression, leak down test shows nothing. The valve seals are leaking. At 27,000 miles I burnt an exhaust valve. That was fixed on warranty. At 43,000 miles, I burnt another exhast valve. This time, I didn't even try to go to a dealar. I wanted it fixed right, so I took it to an indi. He replaced the valve seals, and that fixed the problem for good.
I can't be absolutely sure that the burnt valves were due to the oil leak, but that is what I think. My theory is that the oil leaked down the top of the valve, created deposits (just like the plugs), until the seal was lost and then the burnt valve came very quickly. I had compression tested 1K before the last burnt valve, and it tested OK.
I have an 05 Road King. After the 7500 mile service, it began using oil, about a quart every 1000 miles which for low mileage is not totally unusual. Because there had been problems with the seals, my dealer, Hampton Roads HD offered to replace the seals and guides at the next service. To make a long story short, I made a deal with the service manager and while they were replacing seals, I had them doa SE204cam, tensioners, heads, hone the cylinders and put new rings in. This saved me about 600 in labor, since they were tearing it down under extended warranty. Bike always ran good, but gone is the pinging and low end torque is great. I love my dealer.
