Default HQ 113"

Has anyone here done a 113 upgrade to their touring bike? Does the dyno match their claim? How much did the labor cost.

I am starting my research, I dont want to split the cases $$$, but I do want more TQ, currently at 99 /90 tq/hp. Reading about Phil M and others builds I am getting convinced that I need a better running motor and HQ seems the way to go. I dont have time or skills to do myself so I will have to pay a good mech to do it for me.

Lyn (LRK0) has a couple buddies having them built right now & asuperheat (or something close to that) just finished one. He had a thread on it. Pyrateeye is also finishing one up.

The "numbers" advertised are conservative. Depending on specifics of your build, the can easily be higher. The REAL thing is the way they "ride"...

Give those guys a shout....

Kevin's (pirateye's) 113" HQ should be done this week. Also, bigjohn1percenter recently built one of these for a buddy; suggest you PM him for his opinions and labor time for the work. Asuperheat just finished an HQ 113, also.

Before taking on the expense of the 113, I'd suggest you consider an HQ 103 since it will be a far different engine than your current HD 103. While the tq in your current engine builds to a peak at about 4K rpm, and then falls off rapidly (at least in the dyno charts I've seen in the HD SE catalog), the HQ 103 builds tq quickly (by ~2500 rpm) and stays there to 5K or so.

where the hell have I been to miss this thread---Carl, PhilM, Dalton, and others are on target.

I can only comment about HQs--- I have a very healthy respect for the 103 build---the bike will burn rubber and slide in 1st gear for 20 feet, then in second gear for another 20 feet.

Before this build I would try and do this with the standard 96get 10 feet---now I burn the clutch due to a healthy fear of hitting something---I am still practicing the burn-outs

My club brothers saw and one rode my bike they immediately scraped their plans for other builds and called HQs---two 113's getting done right now.

If a 103 will do this --- imagine what a 113 will do--don't even want to think about a 120---my total cost with parts, labor, dynoand incidentals was about $3700--I tried to get the best of everything---I knew going inI wanted amotor that couldwithstand a beating --- so far so good --- heat is down and gas mileage is terrible---I kept hitting the gas---cruising at 100mph is not a problem.

Disclaimer--I do not endorse doing burnouts or riding at 100mph---remember safety first.

Lyn

I havent had a chance to get my 113" broke in had some problems geting my map flashed got that done and had to adjust some timing down low to get it to start better and get rid of a miss @ 1900 rpm. I did get it close to right on sunday got to put about 125 miles on it then had batery trouble. Not the easyest motor on a batery. Picked up a batery today but I will not get a chance to put any miles on it this week I will have to try this weekend. It is not dialed all the way in yet but it is running quite well right now, the protuner is dialing in the fuelbut I will have to see how far I can push the timing once I get time to set the lap top up to record the info to see where it starts to knock. As far as the true #'s to the wheel I can't say yet but it is fast. The power is very usable through the rpm range and there is no place in the rpm that you do not feel it is ready to take off. The 575 cam I am very happy with the last thing I wanted was A bike that was strong up top but a dog where I ride. This set up works well and I have found myself crusing at 2000 rpm and never felt I was close to luging the motor even at the low rpm's a slight twist surges the bike forward.I will get it dynoed after break in but I believe there are big swings in dyno #'s from one to the other. The Tq. lines and feal of the bike is more what I am after. Hope this helps andI willpost my dyno results after I get it done.

supposedly you will get better gas mileage with the larger motors --- I don't know cause I can stay off the gas long enough to find out --

I did not check it yet but I think it is as good as my previous 95"build that got around 42mpg. (based on the fuel used on distance traveld.) Im sure this is greatly afected by the tune but the higher compresion motors seem to be more effecient in my expereance. Also afected by the riders agressive style and ones lack of restraint to drive like a sain person.

Real happy with my 103" HQ build. I have no idea where the numbers are yet but eventually may take it to get dyno'ed out of curiousity. The fun factor is a 13 on a scale from 1-10. What I find impressive is the feel of the bike and the torque. The power is linear and just pulls no matter where I am in the RPM's.In the higher gears a quick twist of the throlttle and you are almost immediately going 20+ mph faster. However when just cruising it is so well manored. Cams gave the bike a nice sound and is slightly lumpy. I am happy that I have the best of both worlds. Great relaxed cruising but when I feel like playing I have a lot of power to play with.

By comparison my previous scoot was a softail with a 95" kit. I didn't have the insights of HDF and some of those members on that build. While the bike ran good it only really made power above 3500 rpms. As I stated before the new ride is linear and has power everywhere. The old bike was making 100/100. I have no idea where the new bike will be as I am still breaking it in but it does feel faster. I will not be surprised to have 110+ in each category. Regardless I would gladly lose 10 ft/lbs and hp to maintain the awesome curveI know this bike has.

One VERY important lesson I learned and swear by is in Phil M's signature. "Always use parts that complementone another"
