MrHD1 is correct. As for buying used or new here are some things to consider. The 2002 was the last year for the double TIMKEN crank bearing which is far superior to the later models. If you build a bigger engine you should have it converted to the TIMKEN design if your going to run it hard. I would look for a 2002 or slightly older RG and do the 95 conversion with head work and gear drive cams. Throw in a BAKER DD6 tranny and blow away any 08 models. I don't have the BAKER yet but it's on my short list. My neighbor has an 08 RG and loves it but I will run away from him but his does look nice!
Just to throw this out there... I picked up my '06 road glide with only 1800miles on it over Labor day thru a private sale. It cost me $14K. I initally found it on ebay, he was close-by and we made a deal off line. I'm a happy man. Lots of good deals on used bikes out there right now!
Normally I would say buy used, avoid depreciation and go with no payments but not when considering the '08's.
I really believe ABS could be a life saving feature if ever needed. Take it from someone who was involved in a major accident that I think may have been avoided if I had a better braking system. PRICELESS!!!
You also have a larger motor, IDS and 6 speed. Money well spent. Gauranteed, you will forget about the extra cashyou put out in no time! lol! Plus, you will avoid always second guessing yourself, wondering if you should have got a '08.
jmho!
I have an 07 and love it.................the 08's have the 6 gallon tanks and the abs whiich is big...............plus add in the six speed and I think you have the PERFECT motorcycle
As of lately my last two motorcycles I let the other guys take the beating like an 06 SG with 4k miles for under 15k a year agoor an 07 SG with 600 miles with power commander and rush slip ons for 16,800 three months ago. I sold the 07 right of way to my brother in law for no profit he wanted the 6th speed and the bigger motor I did not care I am not strapped for money. If you look hard enough you will find a great deal and like someone else said with all the savings you can build a serious motor and ad a baker 6speed, that is something I plan on doing after I decide on the wheels...
I picked up a 2000 RG carb with 35k for $10000.00 late last year. It has stage 1, slip ons,S&S 510g cams and a chopped tour pac. Got to put about 1000 miles on it before the winter weather kicked in. I love it, if I had ridden the RG before buying my Fatboy I never would have bought the Fatboy. It's nice having 2 bikes though.
