I have Andrews gear drive cams installed and need to open the cam chest up again. What is the best way to pull the pinion gear and cam drive gear off, hopefully without and special tools?
I just installed the Andrews 26G gears this weekend. I had to remove the pinion gear after tapping it onto the shaft. I used a steering wheel type puller (a puller with slots for two screws). The Andrews pinion gear has two 1/4-20 holes. Run screws into holes and pull using the slotted puller to prevent excess pressure on gear along toothed outer edge.
Thats what I thought. I also think I read where someone threaded a bolt thru them to "push" them off. We'll see. Thanks for the reply.
If you take one of the cam cover bolts, it will thread into the holes in the gears and push the gear off. Make sure to use a thin piece of metal behind it to protect the cam plate.
You can also take a small pry bar, and GENTLY pry it very slowly, going from side to side alternating around the gear.
Most gear pullers won't work...............there just isn't enough room to get the jaws on the gear, it sits too close to the cam plate.
+1, a small slottedpuller is the safe way and can be found just about any parts store. The other ways mentioned would most likely work also, but the puller is the safest IMHO.

I don't have mine completely done yet. I ordered new lifters from Zanotti's beforeI started the install. The boxthat contained the lifters arrived EMPTY. Friggin' UPS [:@] Can't complain about Zanotti's customer service, they were kind enough to send replacements at noadditional cost, they arrived today. I will finish up Wed. and start it up. Sucks that it is very cold here now, I'll try to ride a few minutes anyway.
