Default Oil Cooler install

I've decided to put an oil cooler on my bike and I know it takes a 7/16 hex driver. I have a spare 7/16 hex wrench [ aka. Allen Wrench] and I was going to cut off a length of it and put it in a regular socket on a torque wrench to torque the bolts. Can someone tell me what length I need to make it? Ball end or straight end ? thanks Dan

It's pretty much a straight shot into the center of the oil-filter housing, so the hex length wouldn't really matter provided you have about a 6" or longer extension for your ratchet. Just guessing here, but I'd say a 1½-2" section of hex with a 6" or longer extension and 7/16" socket would do it.

Thanks, iclick for the info. When I go into the shop tomorrow I'll cut off a section about 2 in. long. I hate starting a project and not having that SPECIAL tool you need that is called out in fine print on the back page of the wrapper I threw away. thanks again Dan

You can also use a threaded rod coupler. Find them in the Hardware section near all thread. 1/4-20 nuts are 7/16" across the flats.

I have also used nuts threaded onto an appropriate length bolt ( full thread with no shoulder ) with a jam nut at the point of contact.

Are you using the HD cooler? I thinking of doing the same thing but cannot decide between the HD or the Jagg cooler. I have never done one, so I don't know what it takes but I will be learning how here real soon.

There is really no need to cut it off at all, it is used to tighten down the oil filter adapter in the middle of the housing.

I went with the HD cooler, and it works great.....dropped my temps 20-30 degrees.

If you go with the rod coupler make sure its a SAE coupler, I got a metric size from home depot and it was too small, 1/4 x 20 inside thread 9 or 10 mm fit, too small. Just got my 7/16 th socket yesterday from chraftsman, wil retorque this weekend. Used the double nut method to do initial install, no leakage yet and cooler does work ( I think).

BRO, I'm going with the HD premium oil cooler. Steve, the only reason I was going to cut off the hex wrench was because the parts aluminum and I have a bad habit of over tightening things. So I use a torque wrench on critical things. It's no big deal, I have a chop saw and a spare wrench and you never know, when some friend you have never met might need to borrow it. While we are on the subject of oil coolers, when I change oil, is there a way to drain the cooler or just the pan? Second, how much more oil do I need to put in to fill the bike after install/oil change? Thanks again Dan
