Default Question on checking primary chain adjustment

I am past due on checking my primary chain adjustment. Do I have to drain the primary fluid before I can remove the inspection cover and make any adjustments if necessary?

No, but put a block of 2x4 or something similar under the kickstand to getthe bikestanding close to upright. Else you will lose some of the oil in the primary and have a mess. Best time to check it is when you are changing primary oil.

Like UC said, the block helps. Most important it helps with the angle to work on the primary side, and it helps a bunch when you go to put the quart back in. Do not forget it is at a 'bad' angle and later knock it off balance.

Good Luck

You should consider changing to a self adjuster.

15k, was supposed to check it at 10k but didn't cause I was in a hurry when I changed all the fluids... runs fine, but figured I would check it anyway this time around. just changed the oil and trans, but its like 25 degrees in the driveway... think I'll wait a couple days when its warmer to change the primary fluid and check it when I do that.

If you have a jack, just lift the bike enough to straighten it up.
That will make it easier and no chance of oil spilling out.

While it's apart, put on a self adjuster. Well worth the money.

I have heard that some people are having trouble with the Harley self adjusters. They overtighten the chain.

The adjustment takes minutes. I wouldn't add complexity (self-adjuster) to a simple concept.
