I sold my 06 in the fall. I'm about to purchase the 08 ultra ( have a hold on it until Monday) off the floor. I'm getting conflicting statements from people regarding pipes. I would to put the V/H pipes on the bike when purchased so the warranty will follow with the two yrs. Now they are saying since the 07's, i will have to not only get the stage 1 upgrade, i will also have to purchase some type of tuner and have it dyno tested. Can you guys help me out before Monday???
thanks,
Big Jim
Here we go again. The next few posts' will tell you to buy a Power Commander that is old technology and do it yourself because the dealer is trying to steal more money out of you. Here is the thing. Find a shop with a good reputable tuner that is familiar with the SERT and have the tuning done. It will maxmize your performance and give the best posible fuel economy avalible. It is done once, your system works like is was designed to and if done by a dealer, warranty should not be a problem. You are not married to that shop after that. If done properly, it only needs tuned once. The PC will eliminate the 02 sensors and operate in open loop. This will eliminate alot of the technolgy built into your system.
I just traded my 06 EGC for the 08 Ultra and I swapped over my Vance & Hines Oval slip ons and did a hi-flow air filter and got the VH Fuelpak and installed it in a matter of minutes. Depending on what many people call a Stage 1 upgrade this is all you have to do. On the 08's you can't get the Stage 1 download anymore so you will have to choose a fuel management device and I feel like the fuelpak is the least expensive route to go and even a 5th grader can install it in no time.
thanks for the quick response. I just got off the phone with the dealer. They are telling me with the Rush pipes (338.00) and they are using the Screaming Eagle race tuner 1 (391.00) and 150.00 labor. What do you think or advise. She suppose to call me back for a price on the V&H pipes.
That's using a canned map, a dyno tune would be more accurate and costly. Those prices are reasonable. Get the a/c, too. AFTER you put a few miles on the bike. 1000 mi service is a good time to switch to Syn oil and play with the mix. Stock 08's run just fine, just too quiet.
I must be a dumb ***, is the AC thing your saying a air cooler?? If so, where do i look for and how does it work? I never had anything like that on the 06
A/C equals air clearner is this case. They are recommending with a exhaust upgrade you also add a high flow air cleaner such as the Arlen Ness BigSucker, K&N or Screaming Eagle, etc. Good luck on yours. I'm waiting a while before I modify my 08.
Definitley do not get the hardware and the tuner, get SERT, separately. I ws told to get the hardware at purchase for the warranty, what warranty, they didn't have the 08 SERT yetand slip-ons discolored, the baffle on the rear cyl. fried and then I was screwed. If I were you I would keep it stock anyway.
If all that you want to do is change the pipes to get a better sound, you can change nothing but the mufflers and the bike will be fine. If you also change the air cleaner then you also need to do the SERT, PCIII, Thundermax, or whichever fuel management system you choose.
