I have an 05 SE Electra. Other than taking the engine and tranny apart and having the the black powder baked on (Big expense), does anyone have any suggestions on how to black powder the engine/tranny w/ quality look and duration?
Your engine should already be black if it's a SE model, shouldn't it?
If your talking about converting your chrome parts (rocker covers, nose cone, primary, etc) to black, you might try offering to trade yours to someone with a Night Train.
Engine, tranny, primary, etc can all be painted. We reccomend VHT high temp paint, it comes in various colors including wrinkle. Just follow instructions for a very durable finish.

That's a mighty tall order. You want to take a short cut, but expect a high quality finish? I do realize how much it costs to tear down the engine and tranny to powder coat, then reassemble, and I understand you not wanting to fork that kind of $$ out but you gotta be reasonable.
You can always try to mask off everything and spray paint the parts the best you can. That'll definatelly save you time and money right away but will it give you what you're looking for? That's for you to decide.
Back in the 70's and 80's we used to paint the engines black. You have to make sure the engine is very clean and you will have to respray it every year.
If you really want a black engine in an SE, I've got a stock 88 i'll trade you even for . No really, if you want black cases your best bet is to tear it all down and powder coat it all. Since it's all apart you could do some sweet mods like a Baker OD6 and maybe a 117" or 124" motor.
...that's the thing I never understood about the SE bikes...they chrome out all the rest of the bike, then leave the engine a dull raw aluminum color..never made sense to me that a $35,000 dollar bike would have a dull engine case and jugs...they finally saw the light with the Road Glide and started puttin black and chrome engines in em, ( it's what stopped me from buyin the RG in 05 when I got the E Glide Classic)....I wouldn't bother if I was you...almost guarantee it's gonna look half-assed unless you tear it all done..
