Default Dealer service Question

Ok. this might be a really dumb question. I have always used an indy shop. Had a metrioc and thats all he works on. Wont work on my new harley. I dont want to use SYN3 because rumor has it its made by Citgo and we know about them. Anyway, if I bring amsoil to the dealer will they use it in my oil change?

If you were a dealer, making your living from selling parts and service, would you let someone bring their own parts into your shop and ask you to install them? Change your own oil. It's not difficult.

Eddie, First of all welcome. You don't say how old your bike is. I ride with guys that are on both ends of the question. A couple of them take it as an afront to their manhood if they don't do all their own work. Others are willing to pay the dealer's price to do it all and not have to think about it. It's a question of what you can or are willing to door afford. I can afford to have a dealerdo all of it, but I prefer to change may own fluids, anyway, because I want a certaincombination in the bike. I pull my own wheels at tire change time, because the labor a dealer charges to do that is criminal! That has to be the easiest high margin $$ they'll ever make!!! At least if you let the dealer do it all, it's all on them if something goes wrong, but you have to pay for that. Locating an Indy with a good rep is one way tohelp save a few $$$ and ALWAYS have a dealer do any warranty work. Best of luck.

Been lazy a couple of times and had dealer do service,no more, they don't lube cables or neck bearings, final not adjusted properly, battery terminals not cleaned or protected, tire pressures wrong, missing valve stem cap, haze over chrome from their crappy wash job,you get the picture, just go slow, get a manuel, you will be ok doing service, keeep all recipts for oil and filter, track mileage, keep records if any warranty left.

To me a lot depends on the character of the biker and the quality of the service dept. at the dealer. I'm not too good at working on my bike - scared to screw things up, Now, if the task is something simple like programming a new FOB or swapping filters and changing oil, even handicapped guys like me can do that. But if it comes trying to fix something I can really mess up - I let the dealer do it (fortunately, I have a good relationship with all the folks at my dealer and great confidence in their service dept - that certainly helps),

I would imagine a mechanic really hates it when a guy come in with his bike on a trailor, because the guy tryed something and totally screwed things up and now the mechanic's got to figure out what the guy did and heaven forbid, if any of the parts are missing. If I was the mechanic, I'd probably charge a lot more for having to figure out what he guy did, undo the "fix" the guy did and then fix it right. And if the guy didn't like it - oh, well, he can always make a planter or mail box out of the bike.

A FEW YEARS AGO HD OILS WERE PRODUCED BY CHEVRON.
A H-D TECH TOLD ME AT DAYTONA BIKE WEEK

I HEARD THEY BID ON THEIR OILS AFTER THEIR CONTRACT (WITH THE OIL CO IS UP)

SO MAYBE NOW THEY ARE WITH CITGO.. AND YES..IF THE DEALER IS ON UR SIDE HE WILL USE "YOUR OIL"

so what if citgo does produce syn3? you think that by not giving any money to them (eventually ending up chavez) that you are really doing any good? two options here, the evil south american dictator who hates the us, or the middle east, harbingers of suicide bombers and us hating extremists....

besides, citgo does have a lot of people here in the us (good ole american boys and girls) that depend on them for their livlihood. and they do give reduced cost heating oil to low income/elderly folks in the wintertime. what has the middle east done for our elderly folks lately? other than make them have to buy cat food cause they had to spend all their grocery money on gas?

the bottom line is we have to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, whether it come from ven. or the middle east, or timbuk-freakin-tu.

edit: this post is not intended as an endorsement for syn3 oil. use whatever oil you want and change it per recommended intervals and you should be fine.

Our shop will put in your oil if you bring it in, they'll just take the price of their oil off the bill.
