Some time back there was some info on other services that were available in case of breakdown on the road. Does anyone have that info or should I just renew with HOG? Thanks
RV Roadhelp. It's a co-operative deal between Allstate insurance & KOA. I found it years ago when I owned an RV. They'll tow *anything* you're "driving". Even rentals for just the membership fee. Membership is reasonable & if you camp the discount at KOA nearly pays for the service. I've taken advantage of the service several times over the years & it's always courteous & timely. Customer Service is at: 1-800-786-2277

One benefit of national HOG membership that some seem to forget....local chapter membership requires national membership. So if your local chapter is important to you and you want to retain active member status (for whatever that's worth to you), national HOG is worth it.

Read This Post, Mine expired and I'm not renewing!:

With HOG memberships due, I thought I would share my experience with a flat tire and dealing with HOG. It was a Sunday afternoon ride, just the wife and I, when the dreaded flat tire struck. First flat in about a zillion years of riding. For those who are interested, it was the rear tubed tire, went down immediately, you have no time to react...in fact I wasn't sure what happened, but I got the bike stopped on the berm safely.

Called HOG. I was transfered around about three times and finally told that someone woud call me back.An hour went by with no return call, so I called again. Same deal...someone will call you right back. Another half hour and I finally got someone to tell my problem to. FYI...you are dealing with a road hazzard insurance company out of Florida. The individual I spoke to was....shall we say...English challenged. We had a serious communication problem.

I told this man where I was at and I needed a tow. He had trouble locating me on a map. I kept telling him I was on route *** about 5 miles from city "A" and about 8 miles from city "B". The hunt for me continued for about 1/2 hour when he decided to get help and call me right back. Another 15 minutes and he calls back and we now have a three way conversation with our new member also "English challenged."

Between the two of them they found Cities "A" & "B" and the road I was on, but they wanted to know exactly where I was at. Since I was parked next to a sign the said 8 miles to city "B" I told them exactly where I was at.They still had trouble, apparently thinking there should be an "X" on the map that marked my location. Finally, out of frustration, I asked can you see city "A"? "Yes" Can you see city "B" and the road between the two? "Yes" I'll be the only "f"ing motorcycle sitting at the 8 mile sign with a flat tire!!

We'll call you right back. Another half hour.....and they call to inform me there were no dealerships near me open on Sunday. I already knew this, and explained I wanted towed home. (By the way...they will not send someone out to fix your tire which is what I had hoped for.) "OK, we'll find someone to tow you home and call you right back.

In the meantime, my wife got a membership list of our local chapter. I found a member whose address was located about 15 miles away. I called him, and by luck found him home. He had a trailer and would be glad to come get me if the HOG deal fell through.

HOG calls back...informs me that I am 48 miles from home and will cost $398.00 to tow me home...of which HOG would pay $100.00.

Ouch!! OK how much to tow me 15 miles to my chapter members house? $398.00 and HOG would pay $100.00. WTF?? I told HOG I would callTHEMback.

Called my chapter member...he came....we loaded up my bike and he took me home. Wouldn't even take gas money. (I'm going to give him a HDgift certificate.)

My wife just informed me my HOG membership is due. How much is that magazine worth????

Sometimes when we rant and rave we don't know what we are talking about. This is cut & pasted from the HOG website concerning their roadside assistance program. It states they will tow you to the closest HD Dealership, not your friends house !!! If it's on the weekend the dealer may not be open and you may have to wait until they are. You can pay more for a better program that will cover some of your other expenses. The one you get for your membership fee is the basic plan as outlined below. If you don't like the program then the best thing you can do is get out. If you need it towed to the closest HD dealer and they are closed w

There are other motorcycle options available, I've never found one that was as expensive or had as little value for the money that the HOG towing service does. Join HOG for the patch, pin and comeraderie if your chapter is a good one. Don't join for the towing. I have SoCal AAA RV PLUSand I get $200.00 worth of towing ANYWHERE (read: my house, your house, etc.) and four occurrences per year for $27.00 annual fee (in addition to my AAA membership fee). With HOG I got $100 towing TO THE DEALERSHIP ONLY with only one occurrence per year. Note that AAA towing for autos doesn't cover motorcycles, for that you need the RV towing program.

Been a Natl member for a few years now,but seriously thinking of not renewing.I have AMA Mo-tow so I don't need the tow feature and the Enthusiast magazine isn't worth it to me.I think I will use the money for a suscription to a good M/C magazine.

................................................Th ere is no out-of-pocket expense to H.O.G. members for covered services received up to $100. Members simply sign the invoice from the provider to verify that service was received. For services over the $100 per occurrence, per year limit, the member is responsible for any non-covered expenses or expenses in excess of $100.............................................. ..............
So does that meen you only get $100 / year??? $100 / occurrence / year...???...

That would meen you can ONLY use them once a year if you unluckey enough to need them more then that your on your own...???...

At least thats the way I am reading that...

If you need it towed to the closest HD dealer and they are closed what is AAA or anyone else going to do for you ???
RV Roadhelp will tow you to a nearby hotel/motel where you can stay & call the dealer the next morning. They also cover the entire cost of the tow, like for the BMW rider that needed a tow in Alaska. A little over 300 miles from his bike to repair facilities. Took 'em a while to get to him, but it didn't cost any more for the tow.

Actually,

You need to have the AAA plus with RV/Motorcycle coverage to get a tow from AAA with your motorcycle.

It was $139/yr as I recall. AAA Plus will cover towing up to 100miles and some other stuff such as a Bail Guarantee card(a "get out of jail free card") for traffic offences that require bail (No DUIs, Murder, Rape, etc.).
I haveAAA Plus for backup for my roadtrips on my bike.
Frankly, I have heard too many (Bad) stories about HOG (and experienced **** service from HD in general)to want to take chances with myon-the-roadnirvana. AAA is about the closestthing to a "sure thing" you are going to findIMO - so that is where I went on this one.

Editorial: I would rather pay $139/yr for a (pretty) sure thing, than $40 to get screwed over. Seems to be a trend by the MOCO (and Dealers). Does anybody even give a **** up there??? If I didn't like the bike so friggin' much I would give the whole brand a big F U.
It really bugs that a company can run like they do and go on in perpetuity. I own a business, and I have to go above and beyond for my clientele and I think any self-respecting business would see the economic benefits to doing the same.
Maybe I am missing something here ...

Just wanted to clarifythat point before someone buys the standard AAA (or HOG) and has a nasty (and lonely) surprise on the road.
