I always go by miles. I don't want to push my bike to a gas station

+1 for that. I do the same with my cagers, I can't tell you the last time Itook the gas gage for gospel.

Best bet is to know exactly how many miles you can get on tankfull. I have put 5.2-5.3 gallons in my 04 ultra several times. Only once did bike start to sputter, and right on cue,when I slowed to turn into station. That time it took 5.4 gallons to fill'er up. I wouldn't trust a fuel guage as sole source of how much is left in tank on anything.

Mine comes on at 1/2 left. I generally do not even use the fuel gauge. I fill
up between 160 and 175 miles on the trip odemeter.

i usually go about 180 on a tank, then start looking. Had my pclll dump a map once for some unknown reason and things got scary on a country ride at about 130 miles. Remapped (same map) and everything was fine again.
