I spent way too many hours researching all of the GPS options out there. Believe me I did my homework! I looked at handhelds as well as mounted units. There wasn't a viable unit that I didn't consider.
I bought a Zumo 450 and I am astonished at the capabilites of this unit and the quality of the device.
My advice to anyone considering a GPS is to spend the extra money and get either a Zumo 450 or 550 depending on whether they want the extras that come with the 550. In the long run you will be happy you did!
i know i know its not waterproof, but i got a garmin nuvi 660 it is mostly for my work truck but in weekends i slap it on the bike. got the ram mount works perfect. if it does rain i can put in the windshield bag and off i go.
I have the Magellan 2200T The only diffrence from the 2500T is the geo/marine functions. I have had it for about a year and a half and really like it. It has voice function meaning insted of it saying "turn left in .5 miles" it says "turn left on MAIN ST in .5 miles. Its really nice when you have close streets. Its called text to speach. It has an OK MP3 player, and works off a SD card. The only draw back is that while your in navigation mode the MP3 player does not function. It has a touch screen that works well for me even with gloves on.
With the Magellan you can design a route with stops, but cannot download pre determinded route maps from programs like Microsoft Streets and Trips.
The screen is large and it cost me about $25.00 for a ram mount for the bike. The battery life averages about 6 hours if your using navigation, but longer if your just using the MP3 player.
What I really liked about it was the Price.... Just over $300.00 when I bought mine, but now you can get the upgraded unit 2500T cross over for about $250.00.
Maybe if this units fails, I would consider the Zumo 550, but so far the Magellan has done me right and a right price.
Have an older model Garmin Color Street Pilot... just upgraded my Stereo to a Sony MEX-1GP with a Biketronics adapter so I don't need all the MP3 functions that come with the "newer" GPS models.. fabbed my own mount...
