It's all predictable and pretty simple to understand once you step back far enuff to see what's happening on a global basis.

Get used to it, cause there ain't no reversing it.............We, and the rest of the world, are ALL going to end up'enjoying' a uniform/universal standard of living....To be followed by a uniform/universal government, to be followed by a uniform/universal death as a people/planet and as a solar system.....

Sorry, but the processbegan when the universe was created-happened, and it simply can't be stopped.

Now that I explained it to you, just go back to your day-to-day drudgery of struggling to get to work so you can struggle to pay the bills so you can struggle to remain alive long enuff to die.......

....Andmake sure to ride your Harley every chance you get....And make sure you don't die with a full tank.......At the end of your life, you need to skid in sideways totally worn out and depleted or you cheated yourself.

At what point will you start to cut back on your riding???

I won't.

In fact it costs me to take the bike to work and I still ride several times a week weather permitting.

I have a company truck,,,, someone elses gas, tires, ins.....

The only time I even notice gas prices is when I fill up the bike.

I feel really sorry for you!....here in the UK pricing is at around ÂŁ1.10 per litre...

so to convert that is around $2.00 per litre x 4 = $8 USD per gallon.

Wanna swap?

The technology is there, has been for a while. I am convinced that the Auto industry is capable of making cars that would get 50 or 60+ mpg. Why? They have too much invested into the Oil Industry and visa/versa (how ever its spelled) to have any incentive to change.Profits would be reduced if they made vehicles that could get the maximum mileage. As has been posted by someone else I know there used to be several cars made that would get 45+ MPG back in the 80's.

Also, as long as there is an "Oil Man" in the Presidency things wont get any better. I am not a Bush basher, I agree with most of what he has done, butoil is in his background and I believe influences some of the descisions in that area.

Our best hope is for someone to figure a way to cost effectively use Hydrogen as fuel and be able to convert it from water easily, and on demand to reduce the danger of storage of the gas.

I just can't believe with all the talk of gas prices over the last few years that nobody has yet come up with a car that can get much better than 40 mpg. Even the Toyota Prius doesn't do a whole lot better than that. As I see it too much time and energy is being spent on alternative fuels, especially the wasted effort on bio-fuels, and nobody is doing much to make the fuel we already have go further. Since I only live 4 miles from work my commute costs aren't very high even in my 2000 Xterra, but I do have a little 250 Honda Rebel that might be seeing some commute time this summer as it gets over 60 mpg in town.....don't like riding the Harley to work as 4 miles isn't far enough to get the engine warmed up.

As far as gas prices, it's supply and demand.
Oil prices are set on the world market. With China and India increasing their energy needs, there is not as much oil left on the market. The so-called “Big Oil” companies can not set that price.

Remember, the president tried to get us domestic oil from ANWAR. All the environmental people screamed "NO!"

Can we drill off the coast of Fla? All the old people say "NO!"

Even if we were awash in domestic oil, we can not refine it. The refineries are at 97% capacity, no time for maintenance. Optimal is about 85%.
Can we build more refineries? “NO!” Not in my back yard.
Then, lets talk about the EPA. There are 22 different blends for gasoline, depending on what part of the country you live in. The EPA sets the formula. The refineries can make only so much of formula number one before moving on to formula number 2.
Again, supply and demand.
Oh, then taxes! Here in NC, we are the most taxed state in the southeast. Thank you Gov. Easley.
As far are hydrogen, that is a pipe dream. Hydrogen does not have the energy (BTU's) that oil does. If you get 40 mpg with gas, you'll get maybe 15 with hydrogen.
Plus, if we crack the H2O molecule, there ain't no going back. Once that water is converted, it will not convert back to water.
What do we want to run out of? Oil or Water?
The solution is simple. Drill ANWAR; drill the coast of Fla. Build more refineries.
(off of my soapbox now)

I read in the Houston Chronicle last week that we have a surplus inventory of gas right now and are selling some of it overseas.Consumption in the USAis also down 4%. Two paramaters that usually indicate a price decrease, yetgas prices rise. The price of everything is going up and is in one way or another a result of energy cost. It has been suggeested that we drill in the good old USA to bring down cost. That would be a good idea but more than likely the pump pricewill remain high and profit margins will just increase. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it. I'm no economist but I suspect we are just gettingscrewed.

Cut back riding?! Like others have said ... I don't have any gas-sippers in my driveway... I'll be riding more! The cages I have are both modified(unfortunately wrt this thread) toward the direction of worse mpg's! [:@]

Now if I can just figure out how to squeeze my daughter, son and girlfriend on the bike at one time ...

I can remember when gas went up to $1 a gallon.People bitchin and complain.Same thing every time it breaks a new $ barrier. Some is demand and some is pure greed(Exxon $41 Billion profit last year)The oil companys and oil producers dont need to lower price as we have proven time and again we will pay the price. It definately sucks but so does bailing out the banks everytime they get stupid. It wont change my ridin,I wont let it.
