Here in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, they've been riding BMW'S for the last few years and really seem to like them. I've owned seven of them and don't have a bad word to say about them. They just don't touch your soul the way a Harley does!
We bought Kaw KZ1000's in the late 90's. They were sorry bikes. In 2000, we started getting HD's. Ours have been pretty much bullet proof.
I went to the MoCo's Motor School. I was impressed with how tough the bikes were. We rode them at walking speed, riding the brakes, and slipping the clutch for 8 hours a day for 2 weeks. Let me tell you, they got hot. My bike had one of the fans on it. It was on a thermostat and came on at the beginning of the day and stayed on all day. Not one of the bikes smoked. We checked the oil in them every morning. I don't recall anybody ever having to add oil.....Guess what kind of oil we used.....HD 360 dino.
Colorado State Patrol puts over 50,000 miles on thier bikes and spends the absolute minimun they can get away with, and they get BEAT. Broken belts seem to be thier biggest problem. Cant seem to pull people over fast enough!
Utah must be a Harley state. The cities that use motorcycles use Harleys, the Utah Highway Patrol has some of the nicest Police Standards around, and our town uses the Road King version. The little town of Ivins just west of us, uses a Police Sportster.
I love my HD but if I was a patrol officer I would prefer the BMW or Hondas also. Their ABS is superior for one thing and you have to think of pursuit and fighting traffic etc.

This should read WAS superior. Introduced this model year, H-D's new ABS is every bit as good as the competition's.
No major complaints from the NJSP. On the other hand, the Atlantic City PD, who used Harleys for decades, has switched to BMWs and seem to be very happy with them.
