Default Stage 1 question

I was up at Manchest harley this past weekend delivering my buddies old bike to get appraised so he could buy a new 08. The Service guy who inspected the bike commented on the burn mark on the right pipe. ( I have the same exact burn mark on my pipe. see my sig pick)
He mentioned that this happens when someone upgraded the pipes but does not change the Air intake nor the re-mapping? ( I think this means a stage 1 upgrade?) which makes it run lean.

Well my question is how can I figure out if my ride has had the proper modifications to accomidate the pipes on my bike. I got this 3rd hand and I know the pipes are not stock because they are much bigger and sound nice. The original owner must have swapped them out and the second owner I got the bike from had no idea what was done to it..

Any advise??? and am I at risk of damaging the bike if I keep riding it like this?

Thanks

Do you have a high flow air cleaner on the bike ? What type of bike do you have, year, model, carb, injected ? If injected you should be able to look at the ECM and see if a fuel management device is plugged into it. If you aren't sure what to look for and don't have knowledgeable friends to look at it, take it to a dealer and have him check it out for you.

I think the Harley tech would know if a stage 1 kit had been installed just by looking at it. There is really no telling if the bike had been remapped after it was riden with the new pipes or not at all. It's always a good idea to keep a record of every bit of work done on a bike including receipts or documentation, I.E. readouts. having it remapped would cost about $150 at most shops if that's all you're having done.

I'm betting it does not have a Stage 1 map if it's Fuel Injected. Those look like aftermarket mufflerson the stockheader. That mark is only on the right side pipe right?

When Idid the same thing without a download I experienced pretty much the same thing. I later came backand added true dual headers, high flow air filter and had my Harley dealer do the stage 1 map. While that seemed to stop the discoloration on the muffler I have never been really happy with the idle speed since the download. Still trying to resolve that one.

By the way, try some BlueJob and a bufferon that mark on your pipe and it should clean it right up.

Thanks everyone,

Peppa -I don't know what a high flow air cleaner would look like, but I don't think it does becaues it still has the black plastic ring around the inside of the "football" cover. oh and it is a 03 RoadKing Classic with Fuel injection

Easternsp - Since I am the third owner I don't really know what was done to the bike before I owned it. This summer I will take it up to a dealer and ask them.

Drifting Texas - It is Fuel Injected and yes that burn is only on that right side. I don't have any complaints about how it runs or idles so I wouldn't mind doing nothing to it, I just dont want to hurt the engine or anything by not doing what I am supposed to..
And thanks for the tip on the "Blue Job" I will definately give that a shot.. can that be purchased at most autoparts stores?

No, sometime you can find it at your local Harley Dealer but I bought mine on the Web. Here's a starting point.

http://www.blue-job.com/

I can't remember how much I paid but it was pricey and not much in the container. Even though there's not much in it I still have plenty left. A little goes a long way.
