I don't know if you wear a helmet or not, but get nailed at 65 by some huge a-- bug or possibly a bird and you'll know why you might want to keep it. I've ridden a lot of years without windshields and loved the fresh air, but wasn't touring much. Got nailed in the middle of the forehead by a cicada on my standard in 06 and I had a standard 12 in. shield and still got nailed. Knocked me looney, well worse than I already am.
18" IS NOT the mini. Mine is 13" standard size.
I have the 06 EGC with full height. Have the fairy wings that mount either side bottom
of fairing, and the chrome deflectors that mount on the sides of the forks.
Most days they work quite well at deflecting the wind.
The short windshield I believe is for looks only. Last year I rented an '07 Street Glide with the 4" windshield. Useless. I guess the fairing would not look right without the 4" trim IMHO.
