Key West is what it is. Stay in one of the upper keys and daytrip to Key West. Be careful with parking, use the public lots, they will tow you in a heartbeat.
If you're set on staying in Key West, just make sure you are within a short walk to Duval, closest to the sunset pier end. The last trip I made, I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Marathon which is about 45 minutes away. H.I. had a nice pool and great tiki bar plus there is a killer seafood restaurant right across the street- the names escapes me but you can't miss it. No matter what, you'll have a great ride and fantastic time. If you're a big partier, make sure you get to Rick's. They usually have a great band and upstairs is crazy. If you are looking for a nice meal on the way down that's not very expensive, stop at the Fish House in Key Largo. They have some of the best fish dishes I've ever had. If they have wahoo, givetheirs a try- you'll love it.

Roxnatwist, we've stayed there before, it was nice, quiet, clean and priced right. I always stop first at Sid & Roxie's and lay up a supply of Turtle Chowder (mmmmm!). We always avoid the Mallory Square area with the jugglers and such as that was added strictly as a tourist trap and IMHO is not Key West. If you think any place to stay in is nice in Key West, heh, you need to stay next trip at the Southern Cross. You've been warned!
I always stay at Key West Harbor Inn. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for in KW. Really nice, classy place. Quiet, but just a few blocks from the "good stuff".
Went down their 2 days before start of Daytona. Stayed at Confort inn. Not the nicest place but was fairly clean at that time. If you stay their, dont park your bikes under the trees, one of the guys with me did this and came out to 1/2 of ????? on his rear sadlebag from a bird or birds above. Was a mess. The other thing to be careful of is the local police. We came back from downtown at night and ran right into a check point. Luckely, one of the individuals with use was a law enforcement officer and he flashed his badge and kept 6 of the 8 of us that I know would not have passed the testoff. Just be careful and do not come back to the hotel on the main drag.

If you try making it from Marathon to Key West in 45 minutes you will get a big speeding ticket, more like 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on traffic.
If you stay in Marathon, or are just passing through, and notice a dark green F 150 or a white Street Glide parked at the DAV (west â but you will think it is the south â end of the airport) stop in and look for the bald guy drinking a 7Up and reading a book. Iâll let you know about a couple of places I wonât mention here.
Donât miss the Schooner Warf Bar almost any afternoon and anyplace Larry Baeder is playing at night.
We go every Jan and saty at the Best Western Key Ambassador Inn http://www.keyambassador.com/...always seems cleanmain downside is it is on the oppisite end of the island from Duvall St....in some ways that may be a bright side....we usually take a cab for a couple bucks so no one getsa DUI or riding when they may not need to be after a night doing the Duvall crawl...hope you have a great time.
