'05 Ultra - spark plug wires - help!!! (with pic)
I just bought some nice bright red SE wires for my '05 Ultra.

Took a look and the wires on my scoot and they go beyond where I can see (or reach) before they get to the coil.
Can't seem to reach these clips as illustrated in the service manual below - dang it.
Obviously the tank ain't there in this pic. Do I need to remove the gas tank???If so, best way to do that???
THANKS A BUNCH!!!!!!!!! Dave H.
Left side - center, has the tank gas line (to the intake) - this is a slip fitting. Front cross over line - need to cut one of the clips off (just the clip, not the joint) - I used a pair of side cutters and just nibbled at the clip). Then will need to have something to plug both ends of the hose / tank end. Top console comes off. Back of tank bolt. Then she lifts off.
Back on will need a new hose clamp - really need a special crimping tool to put on the HD ones. Could use a small hose clamp (kind of ugly).
Removing the tank is a PITA..........I syphon out as much gas as I can first, then have a golf tee ready to plug the crossover hose and another length of hose to quickly put on the nipple to keep draining the remaining gas into the container. No matter what you do, you'll always loose some gas and make a mess.
There is a guy on HTT selling quick disconnect fittings for the crossover hose..........$50 for them.

In the '05 service manual - for PARTIAL gas tank removal - it indicates you must remove the console and guts, disconnect the battery, unplug the EFI fuse block, cut some zip cords, etc.....
All I want to do is raise the gas tank a few inches so I can install the new wires. Is that possible???
CAN I JUST LOOSEN THE REAR GAS TANK SCREW, REMOVE THE TWO FRONT SCREWS AND TILT HER BACK WITHOUT CUTTING/BREAKINGANYTHING???
Do I really need to release the gas line pressure and disconnect a bunch of stuff??? Maybe just the quick disconnect supply fitting???
THANKS. Dave H.
But that freakin' wire for the front cylinder that does that loop thing was a pain in the A$$!!!!!!
That little plastic bracket/dodad that rotates on the "nail" holding that wire in two places is JUNK. Broke right off when trying to pull the wire out.
So, I am advising anyone who is going to attempt this to
BUY a few spares of thisbracket BEFORE
youchange your wires otherwise you may be stranded like me waiting for the Harley shop to open up before I can ride again [>:][>:][>:].
I'll bet they're on BACKORDER - NFW [:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@][:@]
(should have been included with the wires IMHO)

Those brackets are only $0.55 each. I bought six of them just in case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The fatter bright red SE wires are THE BOMB.
I'd absolutely swear I gained some HP/TQ/mileage.

Technically you are notremoving the tank but you just as well be.
If you don't have a manual GET ONE and read it!
Now from your description, you can see the wires go up and underneath,
But you can't get to them and the coil, cause the tank is in the way.
Then common sense (which I am finding a lot of people here don't have)
tells you THE DAMN TANK HAS TO BE MOVED OUT OF THE WAY.
Now moving the tank is NOT ROCKET SCIENCE.
directions are in the service manual, or failing that, look close at the tank.
You will find one bolt on each side in the front (Torks head unless HD or someone
changed them on your bike). But I presume you've never had the seat off either.
do you need instructions for that too......
Under the seat at the back of the tank is one more bolt.
Now as I've said before (and people are getting pizzy over this) If you can't figure this
out on your own, you should not being changing the wires either!!
