I finally received my cables, software, and newest and greatest Harley Super Pro-tuner. I am very impressed. I have zero experiance with re-programming an ecm. I loaded the software and briefly read the help section which describes how to use the software. I looked at all the files and chose the one that matches my bike.I decidedthat I could do this. First I installed the S.E. stage one air cleaner. That wasnt bad at all but I am glad I had the service manual. I was a little nervous about taking the tank off but it was a peice of cake. Ire-read thehelp section in thepro-race tuner software and hooked it all up to the bike once I located the data port to the ecm. Turned the ingnition on the the ecm recognized the tuner and registered on the lap-top. I picked the tuning file I wanted and clicked a single button and the download was complete. Turned the ignition off and waited 10 seconds before I un-hooked everything and started the bike. And the funny thing is HD makes a informational how-to CD for the the pro-tuner that I also ordered but it is back orderd and I didnt want to wait for it.
Well I took the bike for a spin. I am impressed for a canned map. Its pretty dam close. Besides increase in seat of the pants power that I can definatley feel, the engine runs a lot better than it did with the California epa file. It idles beautifully smooth now, I dont have any decel popping at all now, which I did stock. And ofcoaurse the power increase is awsome. Might have to get a backrest so I dont get wiskey throttle like I did on my 450 race bike once(another "I shouldnt be alive story"). What I mean is I was riding the bike and let off the throttle a little and than opened it up and it jerked pretty hard, sucker makes the back end tuck down when I accelerate hard.
Unless I am worried about fractions of second on a drag track, there is no reason at all to dyno it. I am very happy with this tuner and the new files.
You mentioned that you have to take the tank off, is it the gas tank?
Does the tank need to be off to install the air cleaner or Harley Super Pro Tuner?

I believe you need to take it off to get to the ECU.
The ECU is under the seat on the touring bikes. I really can't figure out exactly WHY he took the tank off, but stranger things have happened here.[&:]

I guess I was too excited when I wrote this and did not write clear. I took the tank off to install the stage 1 S.E air cleaner kit. For this filter and backplate, you have to remove and discard the throttle body bracket. It has two screws that can only be reached by taking the gas tank off the bike.
Thats awesome. How did you wind up with one when they are on backorder with no release date yet??
Do you work for a dealer??
Dave
I do not work for a dealer. I said in a earlier post that the instructional dvd that comes with the pro-tuner is back ordered. I assume the pro-tuner itself isant back orederd because I am a nobody and I got one from Chicago Harley. I originally ordered a regular race tuner from them. When it came it didnt come with software so I couldnt use it. I called Chicago Harley and they said you cant get the software with the race tuner anymore because of the new pro-tuner coming out. I got pissed and told them the race tuner is usless to me without the software. They said I could return it to them and exchange it for the pro-tuner, which I did. It took Chicago Harley about 2 weeks to get it from the factory, than sent it to me.

Actually the ECM is under the front part of the seat but that doesnt matter. All you need to get too is the data port. The data port on 08 S/G is behind the left side cover. If look just below the fuse block there is a gray plastic connector, it is perfectly square and has a plug in the end of it. It slides off its clip away from the fuse block and plugs into your tuner cables.
Does this fix the "too lean" problem? Or does it still run lean to keep the bike up to par with the emission stuff? What was the cost? How may canned maps does it have? Sorry for all the combined questions.
