Screamin Eagle Heads help
Seeing as how two of my local HD dealers won’t give me a straight answer, I thought I’d post the question here and see what the general consensus was on real world or seat of the pants true performance numbers for a set of SE Heads on a 98 EVO Bagger. I’m sure most of you have the same problems with the dealers, but all I ever ask of them is Honesty for my continued business. So here’s the question: I have a 98 FLHPI (Police Bike) with SE slip-ons, Stage II kit (larger fuel injectors, SE Air box, K&N filter, SE-3 Cam) and the correct download to the computer to make it all work together. It was a night and day difference in the before and after on this bike and now I am thinking about adding the SE Heads to the picture. Does anyone out there know what the average torque and horsepower gains can be had just by putting these heads on ? I know I gain better airflow in and out, and raised compression, so that ought to be good for something. Any answers would be greatly appreciated. TIA…
You would be better off (and save money) if you sent your stock heads in to get ported and polished. Remember, Harley Davidson has to stay within the EPA regs and aren't going to give you that seat of the pants power that you can get from after market. Check out our sponsor here (Big Boyz). They do excellant head work and are very reasonable. They have their phone number listed in their web page so give them a shour. The Harley heads are good quality but I think you can get more bang for your buck elseware.
I think you will only pick up on an average of 3-5 horse with head work for the real world street riding most do. Save your money. I feel better bang for the buck is installing a Fueling oil pump. They claim about 2-3 horse improvement, which I question. The biggest improvement with Fueling pump comes from improved engine life and somewhat cooler running engine. The engine runs cooler because the oil flows in the motor and helps better dissapate the heat and a cooler engine makes more power.
