When I saw the 10lb limit, I figured it was just a suggestion....
There is no telling how much weight we had on the back of the Road King....
It was quick connect too....
It does wear on the connect bushings some over time...
I replaced those once..
I have ran my LOADED luggage on that little rack for thousands of mines , as crazylarry said keep a eye on the bushings {mine are still fine} I would guess 25lbs would be the limit .
I think is has less to do with the weight the rack itself can support and more to do with what that weight (at the location of the rack) will do to the handling characteristics of the bike. So finding a stronger rack will not help. Like someone else said HD is covering their backside. I have had HD and aftermarket racks loaded over 10 pounds and never had a problem. Harley makes the same warning about saddlebag weight and its not because the saddlebags will break if you add more than the recommended weight it is the handling could be adversely impacted.
You are also stressing the lid and the rest of the hardware on the tourpak. While you can go higher on the weight, this is the MOCO's way of covering their backsides.
I had the same problem when I bought my rack. I wanted detachable without a bunch of crappy looking hardware. I went with P/N 53011-98 and have had way more than 10 lbs on it with no problems or any adverse handling characteristics. My OL only weighs 100 lbs so it wasn't a whole lot of extra weight on the back end. So far, I've been happy with the rack and it was one of the cheaper ones out there. Don't worry about pushing the weight limit on the rack. HD puts that sticker on it for the same reason almost every single page in your owner's manual has some kind of life or death warning on it. If you took out all the warnings, your OM would only be about 10 pages long.
I have strapped on a tour pak without a rack. The pic in my profile shows it. I've got the stealth rack now. I've had more than 10 pounds on it...no problem. Oh yea, I did put a piece of cling film on the fender that time I strapped the tour pak on with no rack.
