+1

Actually it takes a good 4,000 miles to break in a new Harley.

Shouldn't matter when you do a stage one UNLESS you're planning on a dyno tune. In that case I'd wait until after the 1k service.

I, myself prefer to break in the bike first, then put the stage one on. The reason being that I don't want to beat on the bike while I am breaking it in. With the loud pipes, its kinda hard not to wick the throttle
Do the job yourself, its easy, and a heck of a lot cheaper! It also makes your bike, your own, you'll be the one who knows your bike the best. IMHO.

It really doesn't make a lot ofdifferance when you do the STAGE 1.
Except if you do from day one the dealer will throw aMAP in your SERT that will make it run cooler, it will get very bad gas milage, butthat's better than breaking in a new engine running super lean( it my opinion).
You can do the pipes and air cleaner your self but you need somekind of computer work to make it run right and not melt down.
I'd stay away from the over priced SCREAMIN BEAGLE STUFF.

I wanted to wait. Run it like it came for the break in then did the stage 1 which is just a very mild upgrade. The dealer wanted me to wait anyway until 1k and said no warranty problems if i wait. Running a Stage 1 without a dyno on a new bike is not so good and doing a dyno on a new bike is stupid.

......and I'm sure that comment is supported by significant research and engineering studies of the "backyard" variety.

Actually, the SE stuff (that has been engineered to fit & perform perfectly on HD's) is very reasonable, especially when purchased at the "20% off" dealers selling online.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate all of your input. The other option would be go with a 07 or 06 with low miles and all the mods done. I have read on here that the 88 is just as good as the 96. I am not lookingto break a land speed record, just looking to cruise and enjoy the ride.

Unless you are buying an '07 directly from a friend who has taken very good care of the bike, you would probably be better off with a new '08. The major benefit is the 2 year, unlimited warranty, that will give you peace of mind for at least the 1st 2 years. You can also purchase an extended warranty that will protect you for 7 years. The 2nd benefit is cost. Dealers (at least here in Florida) are wheeling and dealing on the new bikes right now. Don't be afraid to negotiate just as hard as you would when buying a car.

I have had both the 88 and 96..........they are both wonderful, but that 6 speed makes a huge diff when cruising over 70 MPH.

I am in Florida as well, and the price differance between dealers is crazy. Seminole HD says they will sell 1000K below MSRP. But that is 115 miles away. I guess I could trailer the bike home.
