I have a 08 Ultra. Everything I read says when you change oil just add 3.5 quarts. Now since the total capacity is 4 quarts that means I have .5 quarts of old oil. When I put in 4 quarts ( new filter) the dip stick shows too much oil. If I go from fossil oil to synthetic, then the synthetic becomes contaminated with fossil oil. If this is correct, how do I completely purge the old oil from the system to prevent contamination?
You are really worrying way too much about the pint or less of residual oil. Over time and the next couple changes any old dino oil will work its way out of the system, and it won't hurt a thing in the process.
Like others have said, the little bit you have still in the system will not hurt a thing. As you are adding oil to the bike check the dipstick and when it's full, it's full, no matter what the book says.
