The primary function of that gauge is to fill a hole and balance the look of the dash panel/inner faring!
It shoud read exactly what the air temperature is utside (you can check the weather channel to validate!), but in reality, tells you what the temp is inside your faring.
It's a useles POS HD stuck in there instead of giving us something useful so they can sell the useful stuff (oil temp, compass, etc.) aftermarket!
The temp gauge as it comes from the factory does not read accurately because of where the sensor is placed (it's inside the fairing so generally reads 10-20 degrees warmer than the actual temp, esp in summer).
If you remove the front of the fairing and move the sensor to the outside (drop it down below the fairing and mount it to the area below and outside) and it will read pretty accurately and therefor at least be a useful gauge at least. Many folks go with an oil temp gauge and get rid of the air temp gauge.
