Default Busted axle clamp bolt

Well I did it I pulled the front wheel to install my chrome boar on my fender all was well till I started tightning nuts back. I ended up busting the axle clamp bolt. IT KILLED ME!! Anyway I was wondering is there a torque number to set on a torque wrench for when I am able to get out the old one? Also is the top threads that go in the fork the same or reversed?

HELP!!!!

THAT, mah friend, is why you should HAVE A MANUAL before attemptin' any serious work on yer bike. The specs are in there. Yes, I have a manual - no, I'm sorry - but ah will NOT go git the info - because you NEED that manual to do the job right!!!!!

132-180 IN lbs for the axle cap nuts.

Some people spend so much time giving lectures when they could just post helpful info instead.

May need a bit of heat to get the old one out.

Dude thank you!! I agree I just needed a little help and don't want to wait for 7-10 days to get a book when I could be out riding. I will get the book but I had NOT intention of pulling the wheel to do what I needed to do. It was Sunday and there wasn't anything open. You have been a big help. Would that number be the same for the Axle nut??

The axle nut ( on the end of the axle )would be 50-55 FOOT lbs

Tighten that first then bounce the bike up and down with the front brake locked up , then torque the clamp bolts evenly.

Steve, sorry to hear of your problem.

TRN is, of course, right about the SM, and especially in this specific situation since Steve asked about how to do this back in January--plenty of time to get a Service Manual:

https://www.hdforums.com/m_3236279/m...tm.htm#3236279

See post 3 in the link.

The SM also provides torque specs for the caliper mounting bolts that were removed to allow the calipers to be removed, and direction to use anti-seize lube on the front axle.

Steve, again, sorry for your trouble with the broken bolt.

Point taken. I did ask this question back in Jan funnything my memory is short on a lot of this stuff. Honestly when it comes to the big stuff I ain't gonna touch it. Dealer is not just around the corner so I don't get there often. I had not intention of pulling the wheel in the first place. but I did what I had to do to get the job done. With one minor setback. If everyone had a manual no one would need any help. Then what would be the purpose of this site????

Consider my blunder my personal contribution to keeping this site up and running. Thus supplying a need for it.

I'll get the DAMN manual!!

Actually, even WITH a manual, you'll need help from time ta time. Thing is, with the manual we have a common reference point. Take my recent quandry in another post, for example - I was trying to find the intercom plug in the fairing on my '07 UC. Turns out it's not in the fairing itself, but rather under the console pod. I dug into that fairing like a hound after a rabbit before finally turning to this board - but apparently no one else knew where it was, either.

My solution? A trip to the dealer (yeah - the "stealer" everyone loves to complain about). They turned me loose on one of their techs, who told me it was under the console pod. I gave him a $10 bill for lunch, an' am gonna tackle it later!
