Has anyone had their inner primary chromed as opposed to buying the HD chrome inner primary, and if so how does it hold up? Rocknrod here on the forum was gracious enough to send me his take-off inner primary so I can send it to a chromer. One response I got was that chrome plating will not takeextreme heat or it will blue. I wrote back to the plater and asked what they meant by "extreme heat" and explained that the primary does get warm, but I would not consider it extreme enough to blue. Anyhow, now I'm wondering what has been the experience with others.
I have a 2000 standard, had mine chromed, since 2001 is the first year to have a chrome inner primary available. Mine did not turn blue, but, it did peel at the rear of the case. It does not look bad unless you look at it closely. My suggestion would be to purchase the inner from harley. Have it installed when you need a new beltor a leak at the primary.
By the time you pull the bearing and seals and then have it chromed and then replace the bearing and seals you can buy the HD unit cheaper. If you go online like to Zanotti's or Lakeshore HD you can get 20% of which brings the cost way dowm.
Had my inner primary chrome exchanged a couple of years ago...$350 installed as opposed to $500+ for dealer...looks as good now as it did day one...no problems with blueing, peeling, ordulling at all...however; the HD inner primary chrome does look better overall IMO, but not enough to deter my decision
The cost of the chroming I was quoted is $165. I've already pressed the bearing out of it, the oil seal, case gasket and such are dirt cheap and I do all my own work, so there's no cost there. I was just curious as to how the chroming was holding up on folks' primaries from the ones that went that route as opposed to buying the HD one. Thanks for the replies.
Chrome will only be as good as the plater that does it.
make sure you get someone good. Browns Plating does a
great job.
