I've had the same problem with my '08 a few times now. I asked one of the guys in Service at the dealer yesterday about this problem. He said the problem is possibly caused by the RPMs not settling all the way down before the bike is turned off. So the computer reads that as what the RPMs should be when the bike starts. He said the way to fix it is to use both the kill switch and the ignition switch to turn off the bike. He said to turn on the bike, let the bike idle at whatever the lowest RPMs are that it will, then use the switch to kill the bike, and then turn off the ignition. He said repeat that 4 times and it should solve the problem. I haven't tried this yet since my '08 is in the shop now for its 1,000 mile service. If you try this, let me know how it works out. I'm curious. I also plan on askin' one of the other service guys when I pick up my bike, just to see if I get a different answer.
so resetting the computer for the base rpm so to say? like a master reboot or something similar. i'll give that a try.

That's what the tech told me on Saturday. Got another 600 miles on since then & it's not quite right, so a re-boot, re-flash or whatever they choose to call it, is on the menu.

Nothing quite like being a guinea pig, is there??

I did the "reboot" last night and it seemed to work. Brought the idle down to about 1000/1100 rpms. Now i'm jumpy about touching the throttle.

After you get more miles on it, your scenario seems less likely to happen. It seems once I got over 500 miles on mine, the gremlin moved on. Hasn't happened in the last 1500 miles.

I always just use the ignition to shut down my bike. What is the reason for using the kill switch? I'm not having any problems, just wondering why people like to use the kill switch.

My friend ahs an 08 Ultra and he has had a problem with the idle also. Running about 1500 to 1700 after warm up and if he shuts it off at that idle it will start at the same idle. MOCO has been no help.

The kill switch is handlebar mounted so you can kill the engine if you have a runaway throttle/engine fire. It is there for your safety.

Remember, back in the old days, you had to turn the key off? With a runaway throttle the last thing you want to do is to let go of the handlebar to fiddle with a key.

The owner's manual has a specific start-up and shutdown procedure and it should be followed, not workarounds becuse of bad software on the ECM that allows this to happen.
