Default 1000 service

Here's my problem - I have 900 miles on my 08 Street Glide. I called yesterday for an 1000 mile service appointment and they say the earliest they can do it is May 28th. I know if the weather is at all good I'm going to haveover 1000 miles on the bike by the end of May. My question is how many miles over 1000 will start to effect my warranty and should I change the oil myself around 1000 just to be safe. Then have it changed on May 28th again to maintain the warranty. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you want dealer service, try another dealer. If you don't care about dealer service, do the service yourself & keep your receipts for the warranty. Don't worry about how many miles over you are if you decide to go the the dealer you're talkin' about, just document their delay in providing service.

For what it's worth, my dealer told me to keep it under 1,200 miles, if I start to bump up against the 1,000 mile mark before my service. They include it in thepurchase price of the bike (MRSP dealer). On the other end, he said if the weather turned bad and I only had 800 miles on it, bring it in anyway. The salesman also recommended making my appointment when I picked up the bike. I did on May 3 and the earliest they could get me in was 5/21. Now, I have to figure out how to make 1,000 miles last three weeks.

I know opinions on this vary, but I'd get the first service done at the dealer. It's cheap insurance (especially in my case since it's included) to have a factory trained mechanic do the work at the first service point.

I think I would have an issue if my dealer that I bought my bike from couldn't "fit" me in for 3+ weeks! I do all my own maintence now but if you want to get it done by the dealer I would look elsewhere if you have the option.

Also I wouldn't sweat it if you are a few miles over.

Go somewhere else. It's their loss.

You buy the bike from them and they can't get you in for 3 weeks? I thought times were tough for the dealers!

I called my dealer Friday afternoon and told them I needed my 1,000 mile service which is included with the bike purchase. They told me to bring it in Monday afternoon around 4:00. I brought it in at 3:50 and left the dealer at 6:00. The bikes seems to run stronger now for some reason. My dealer is Renegade in Alexandria, Louisiana. They seem to be a great draler.........so far.

Does every Harley dealer include the 1000 mile service with a new bike purchase?
Thanks!

No. It had to be part of the deal when you signed "the papers".

Funny you should mention this. I had the same dilemma last week. I was at 1400 km's and tried to get an appointment for the following week. Couldn't get one till the end of May. I asked how much am I allowed over the 1600 km mark.. Dealer said only a couple hundred km's over. I was going on holidays last week, easy 1000 km's week. I phoned around and got an appt. at another dealer. Only had to call 4 dealers. Not bad. But, dealer said not to go much over the 1600 km/ 1000 mi .

No, but it brings up an interesting story............ Friend of mine picked up his new '08 Road Glide a while back. Part of the deal was 1 service included in the deal. You know the sales geek is thinkin' 1000 mile service.............. My friend took posession about 11:00 am, & told the service mgr. to make him an appointment for his 1000 the next day. Service mgr. laughed, but my friend says he's serious. Service mgr. says that if he gets the 1000 the next day, "It's on the house"!

Next day, 'bout noon my friend rides into the dealer's with about 970 on the clock. He finds the service mgr. & asks "want me to do the other 30 & bring it back? Service mgr. just shakes his head & takes the bike. My friend got that one from the service mgr., & one to go from sales.............
