Default Broken Cruise Control

Hi all,

Forgive me if this subject already exists. I did my best to find one.

I have 06 Road King Classic for which I just replaced the handlebars and grips. Since the change, my cruise control no longer works. The little light comes up red but the system does not engage in any way. I took it to the dealer who charged me $100 and told me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it and thatI should just have them replace the whole thing for $450. I suspect that they may be serving their own interests over mine

Any ideas for what may be wrong or suggestions for me to look into?

Thanks in advance!

well first off I would find a new dealer. Second I would check for a pinched wire if it was working before the grip change.

I went through this with mine. There are several "cancel" functions to disengage the cruise. If you get a HD factory manual, there is a troubleshooting procedure that will take you through a series of tests to identify the issue. I spent 20+ hours testing and tracing circuits. I did not find any problems and it worked when I finished the tracing and testing. I'm guessing there was a connection or wire that was pinched/crimped/broken and during the testing process it was repositioned so it works.

If it worked before you changed the bars, I would lean toward the front brake switch or the throttle roll off switch. I don't know if your bike has the roll off switch but these are2 of the cancel functions related to the bars.

Good luck, it can be aggravating.

This is a long shot but it worked for me on a long trip. The cruise quit working I pulled over and unplugged the 2 spade connectors that go into throttle cable next to the steering neck plugged them in again & it worked without another problem for many miles.

Check for blown fuse(s). It's very easy to pinch a wire when reinstalling the switch housings and creating a short. Because the wires have very thin insulation, it doesn't take much to penetrate it and create a short, and the plastic conduit that covers the bundle of wires often conceals the exposed wire.

Replace the blown fuse and locate the pinched wire and repair it--then reassemble the switch housing.

Given that the cruise was working immediately before the grip change, it's unlikely that the cruise unit, TP sensor, or some other component failed--probably a short as described in the switch housing wiring IMO.

Awesome guys! I'll go to through the manual and back over the wiring now that I have some confidence that I may get something out of it. Thanks. I let you know how it goes.

One other thing to check is if the brake lights are coming on while you ride. My friend changed his handlebars and forgot the cardboard trick in the brake lever. Now whenever he touches the brake handle the brake light lights up and the cruise disengages. Not a big problem but he used to have lever covers with fringe and the drag in the wind of the fringe was just enough to flash the brakes and cause the cruise to be inop. Just something else to check.

OK, I finally got some time to work on this.&nbsp\\; I pulled everything apart again and verified that the wires are all in tact with no shorting, the plugs were all put back together accurately, the fuses were all working, etc....
&nbsp\\;
The problem/fix was from CS330:
-
"If you broke the brake light switch, it will cost you appx 25.00 to buy the part from HD.&nbsp\\; However, my cruise control was not working on my 06 RKC and I used duct tape as a temporary fix but it worked so well it was still on a year later when i traded the bike in.&nbsp\\; Remove the brake lever by taking out the pin (be careful with the small "c" clip that is on the bottom). If you look at the lever you will see a small "tail" or tab on the end that is inside the housing.&nbsp\\;wrap duct tape around that and place the lever back in the housing, securing it with the pin and "c" clip.&nbsp\\; the duct tape will sit up against the broken swtich that turns off your brake lights.&nbsp\\; when you pull in the lever, it lifts the tape of the switch and your brake lights will work.&nbsp\\; fyi, if the brake lights are on, your ECU module reads it like you are applying your brakes and disengages the cruise control.&nbsp\\; also, it has to be duct tape, i tried black electrical tape and it did not work but the duct taped worked for well over a year." (MS3300)
-
To add to this fix, I was a little confused with how to wrap the tail with duct tape.&nbsp\\; What I did was to trim the width of the tape to match the width of the finger, then&nbsp\\;wrap it like a bandaid around&nbsp\\;the finger roughly 4-5 times.&nbsp\\; Another way to re-infoce that you have the same problem is, after you have removed the brake lever, press the switch in and out with your finger and see if your brake light turns off and on.&nbsp\\; If it does, then the problem is the switch and the tape will do the trick until your ready to replace the switch.&nbsp\\; Don't forget to "lash" the cruise control afterwards.
