Default RE: 96 CI Engine Reliability

I've had a 07 SG since Jan. of 07, 10K miles several long trips and one coming up starting this weekend! No problems, none I've heard of and I have a good friend @ a dealer! I believe it's the best engine yet from the MoCo! Sometimes I think us guys are worse gossips than our better female counterparts...Or is there some form of jealousy out there.....

I've had horrid 'luck' with my 2008 EG Classic. Original motor broke a piston that took out crank at only 29,000 km. Had new engine (crank, top end) for many thousands of dollars, picked it up from shop this summer and 6000 km later got stranded in the middle of the continent, due to broken crankshaft. Flaw in the crank according to several people that have seen it. On non-PTO side too. Luckily it didn't kill me by happening while passing or even riding, but on startup at gas station. Ruined my second summer in so many years. I'm starting to hate the thing passionately. Maybe I just have all the bad luck though, but two engines in a row when I did everything right (at least the second time - I was told running 6th at 100 kph destroyed my first one even though manual says that's fine on flat roads) seems like more than a coincidence. Yes I run premium and Harley oil, and even had an oil cooler and V&H fuel controller this time, running in 5th at 2600 rpm + all the time, watching oil pressure guage constantly and breaking it in carefully/properly. All to no avail.

I hope they're wrong. 42,000 on my '09 so far riding the **** out of it, city and highway. Nothing but scheduled maintenance per the service manual so far.

My 08 Dyna with the 96 was one of those rare cases of runout problems at 50,000 miles. I took good care of that bike and still major problem. When the dealer started talking rebuild I traded for a 12 Road Glide Custom.

Almost 48k on my 2007 (stage 1) and the only issues have been a battery and leaking stator grommet. No internal engine mods made and still running the stock compensator, runs smooth and noise free, except for minor top end noise, which is normal.

if you want to know all the things that could possibly go wrong on a twin cam harley , with the qualification that out of the ten's of thousands twin cams harley has sold, the stuff in this article has happened to at least 1 person, you will find the article an interesting read. A lot of the stuff has happend to me and certainly have seen a lot of threads started by others will simular eaches. I don't agree that the late model twin cam will make it to 40K miles for all owners. Some owners have 75K and all is well, some owners have eaches that occur way before 10K. I rebuilt my engine at 9K. I was motivated to do so after having an over heating adventure that had my engine screeching like it was being cut in half with a hack saw. I found bent push rods, highly worn rod end bearings, indications of excessive crank run out, real excessive carbon build up, in the primary my clutch basket had chipped teeth, my starter gear had chipped teeth, I always found metal chips in my primary oil and always find metal fuzz in both my primary and engine mag plugs. Batteries seem short lived in NYC due to the stop and go traffic which allows a lot of heat to sit around the engine....batteries don't charge well when excessively hot....regulators and stators are problems as well. Recent discovery ....it looks like my swing arm bearings have crapped out...like many others who report various reasons for the high speed wobble. Had I read this article before buying my bike...I would have googled the eaches to see how true they were...and not bought a Harley.
