just remember you are not buffing a scratch or a pit out you are removing the surronding metal down to the level of the scratch or pit. and as thin as the chrome layer is it doesn't take a lot to ruin the finish.
Once chrome is scratched, it's scratched. The only way to fix is rechroming. Do not use a polish or rubbing compound, these will only make the chrome look dull or cloudy because most polishes have abrasives in them. If you are trying to remove the bluing, get a product that says that is what it does, like "Blue Away"
I've never done this kind of thing before but can you clean chrome exhaust pipes using a buffing wheel on a bench grinder? At my local hardware store you can also get a "red" jewlers paste for polishing. Would this work or scratch the *&^^&$# out of the pipes?
I guess this is why my wife says she don't understand me - actually I wasn't asking about removing scratches - I was worried if the buffing process (on a bench grinder) would "cause" scratches. But I think after going through some of the comments here and visiting the recommended web sites the answer really depends on the type of compound you use? What about the buffing wheel and rpm
Cheap old Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Microfiber cloth!!!! On my shovelhead, I have some pitting on my cam cover, but if I keep it clean and polished, it is barely noticeable.

Your question seemed clear enough to me. Thefew times I've tried to clean chrome with any thing other than chrome polish I have scratched it.
