Anyone with experience riding through storms? Should I worry going across the western U.S.? The chances are probable slim, but I've read about some bikers being hit, and those antennas sure look like magnets.
Yessir. There's been several bikes struck by lightening over the years. If thar's lightening, this ol' Texas boi is gonna head fer cover faster'n a rabbit at a hound dawg convention!
Well now...think about it. In a car, the body acts as a conductor to route the electrical energy around the outside and to the ground. On a bike - YER body is the conductor.....
A few yrs ago someone posted a bike in a magazine -BMW-that was struck by lightening. You couldnt tell what kinda bike it was. Best to just get out of those heavy electrical storms.
There used to be a video floating around from a traffic camera in Denver. It showed a biker on the hwy in rush hour, brilliant flash of light, no biker, and there was a hole in the pavement. You would've thought with all those cars around with all that metal, but no...God has no sense of humour, and hates bikers.
First sign of lightening- I'm out of there....
Luckily the thunderstorms that produce the nasty lightning usually move kind of fast. I've pulled off the road several times to wait out a thunderstorm, in most cases its less than an hour and you can get rolling again. To me its well worth my time to sit it out....I've read too many articles about bikes being hit and its not just the antennas....any bike is a target once those bolts start flying.
