mp3 CD issue - still...
The problem IS with certain mp3 files. Odd, as the info (bit rate, encoding, etc.) looks pretty much the same in the "Get Info" screen in iTunes.
The REALLY strange thing is the certain songs - ripped from the same (store bought) CD act differently.
Example: I bought Collective Soul's latest release - "Afterwords" - from Target when it came out. I immediately imported it into iTunes. (160kbps, 44.1, mp3 files) and burned an mp3 CD of it yesterday. SOME songs play - some don't. I believe THAT eliminated the ID3 tag hypothesis.
Of course - by that LAST statement, I showed my geekyness.
Looking at harmankardon.com - there's NO link to the HD Radio tech support.
The ONLY specification of file type from Harley is MP3 2.5, Level III.
My head hurts - and it's too early for me...
I'm glad there is so much interest in this. Being a techie myself, I'm trying to find out how I can get a stereo to utilize the hand controls for an Ipod. I'm sure it's a wiring harness type thing, but who knows.
As far as getting iTunes music to burn as an MP3 - well, there are programs that you can use to convert them from the MP4/A (or whatever) format to MP3. It's a bit of a pain in the *** process, but if you are determined to do it, the tools are available. I *think* if you pay a little more for select songs - you get the DRM removed. I think it's like 1.29 per song as opposed to .99 and I usually go for that if it's available.
I wish I knew more, but I've only had the bike for a couple weeks (and 1200 miles later
here I am...They make GREAT interface stuff for cars - shouldn't be THAT difficult to mod it for a scoot. (IMHO)
The DRM-free iTunes songs you're talking about is the "iTunes Plus" option. Basically - it's a 256kbps aac file.
You STILL need to convert it to mp3, but you can use iTunes for that. (As long as your preferences -> advanced -> importing options are set to mp3. The default is aac)
You could check the disc capacity? Discs come in 74,80 or 90 minute (650, 700 or 800Mb) versions and I know several devices have problems with 90 minute discs. Personally I do not use the 90minute CD's since they give too many problems.
I have tried burning it at 2x, as well as 48x - no difference.
I took the CD to my dealer yesterday, and it didn't work in an 08 Street Glide - so it's PROBABLY the MP3 file(s).
It *could* be a bad batch of radios - but I kinda doubt it. I just wish I could see a difference in the file - or there was SOME consistency. (There isn't - bit rates, what was used to import the file, etc are all over the place.)
I reconverted a bunch of files to 160kbps, 44 kHz, 2.4 ID3 tags last night, and wrote another CD. (I remember when CD-R's were $1.50 each - glad they're not anymore) and I'll try it tonight at home...
Confusing, this is.
Many cd players have been reported having problems with that bitrate (Sony for one). In the future try ripping all of your mp3 files at the same bitrate and lower than 192.
I'm gonna guess that the songs that won't play were the ones you ripped at 192 kbs.

The bitrates of the files are all over the place - MOST of them are at 160.
Some 192's play, some 128's play - and conversely - some 192's don't, and some 128's don't. (Same applies for all the different bitrates.)

damndamn.
Someone HAS TO have fixed this problem. I'm almost ready to go out and buy a stupid little iPod shuffle for $50, and hook it up via the AUX port.
I can't help you on your problem but I have 2 CD's that both run OK on my bike.
I have the iPod set upand alsouse the CD with mp3 files on it.
I will use the iPod when my wife is with me so we can listen to music we both like and when she turns down her headphones I will switch to the CD with my musicthat I like better. That way I am not trying to change the iPod to another playlist while I am moving. This set up allows me to switch back and forth safely.
If I am by myself I just use the iPod all the time. I will leave my music Cd in the radio for a back up.

It's the album artwork.
I cleared all of the artwork on the playlist - and then got the artwork again via iTunes - and that seemed to clear up the problem.
Finally.
187 songs on a CD-R.
