Literally. Memorial Day, enjoying a nice ride and was on my way back to the house. I looked off for a second (that's what they all say) and when I looked ahead again, the car in front of me was dead stopped. No good reason, just stopped. I hit the brakes and locked up the rear wheel much to my chagrin. The back came around and the rest, as they say, was history. I fell over and slid for a bit and finally stopped. My first thought was "S**t, I just polished that SOB". Got her stood back up and discovered that the engine guards did exactly what they were there for. They took all of the damage. About that time, the pain in my knee started and I realized I had scraped it pretty good also. No other damage to me because I was wearing a helmet (nice scrape that would have been my skull without it) and a good mesh jacket that had scrapes on the elbow and shoulder. I was wearing jeans, hence the scrape on my knee.
I have now joined the ranks of the "those who have" and left the "those who will". I got back on the scoot and still had a pretty good ride.
I got home and told the old lady about it and told her this would likely not have happened if I had ABS. Truthfully, in thinking this over, I decided that I could spend a lot of time practicing panic stops and still react badly in the heat of the moment. The OL said "So, I suppose it's time for a new ride then." I Went to the dealer and traded in my 2005 Black Cherry and Black Pearl Ultra for a 2008 Copper Top. The dealer gave me what I considered a pretty good deal, taking my old bike from me for about 500 less than the retail blue book value. I got the new one for MSRP without set up, shipping, and all that other crap they like to add.
It was hard saying goodbye to my old ride but, in the end, the newer bike won out. Let's hope I go a long time before I find out how good that ABS really is.
I hope it's a long time. Glad to hear your OK. When you got up was the car still stopped or let me guess they drove off while looking at you in the rear view mirror.

Thanks...You guessed it. Gone. In fact, my next worry while I righted the bike was that I would be a speed bump for someone. Another cager pulled up and stopped and said "I can't believe all these folks are driving by like they don't see you". That was nice. By that time I had the scoot up but had forgotten to put the stand down. He put it down for me so I could get on, I thanked him, and off I went.
Very fortunate, glad you are ok. When you were sliding was your leg under the bike [&o]? Or did you have time to get up and over... Man... glad you are back up... I rode last night first time without the mesh... My wife was really ticked at me. I've been thinking though about those special jeans with kevlar in them... I wonder how that would have helped.

Best,

No chance to get the leg up and over, I fell on my right side and didn't have time to even consider that I was going down. All the way home I dreaded telling the wife because I thought she was gonna freak. I kept thinking that if I had my mesh on, there would be nothing to tell. Lesson learned, I wore my gear for my ride today and was happy to have it.
Been there done that !!!!
Scared the crap outa me at the time.
I was lucky though as I was on my Beemer - K1200LT with ABS
Bike stopped dead with a nudge on the guys rear fender. Cost me $300 for repaint.
Not so good on my Beemer - nearly $4000 including front wheel.
The moral for me though was that there was no lock up or going down, the bike stopped upright & dead straight.
When I bought the RG in October there was no question that I would take the ABS option. HD got it right too, the ABS works very well - tested it a few times on quiet roads - likely wont ever buy a bike again without it
Glad to hear you were ok - when you can get up like that after going down - its a good day.
Make sure you test that ABS on the new ultra = its a new experience if you have never had it
good luck
