If your bike ever died in traffic, or going up a steep hill in traffic, \\;you'd be very happy to be able to start it in gear.
 \\;
It would suck to then try to find nuetral before you could get it started again
 \\;
Starting in gear is actually a safety feature.
Let me clarify, 1st \\;I love this bike(06 Ultra) \\;wouldn't trade the bike or the \\;technology i like it. I buy American. I love my country. I worked as a Master Tech for GM (Union Aerospace Workers same as Harley) \\;dare i joke and say we used to laugh and call it general mistake. I would never bad mouth Harley Davidson. I'm a true American. I put up with all the complaints on cars for years i was a driveability tech. I promise to use LOL or a smiley face next time. Didn't mean to offend anyone espicially the true Harley \\;folks. I didn't want to bad mouth my friend and his buds who really \\;scare me that they want to ride.  \\; \\; \\;
Yeah osolow, all those old hard core riders with about a million miles under 'em don't know chit about Harleys and never did. Don't listen to 'em\\; they'll just get you all confused.
First...my car won't start unless the clutch is in.
 \\;
Second...50% of the time I am not even sitting on my bike when I start it...never use the clutch to start it.
 \\;
Know what you are riding/driving...sounds pretty simple.
i got my bike on the 7th of this month so that puts me at  \\;14 days \\; of ownership but it rained for \\;4 days \\;and the it was kinda hot \\; last \\;week and i had a doctors appointment and didn't want it sitting in the parking lot of the hospital, then i had to go out of town for work \\;for 4 days so i think that puts my grand total of miles to? hold on i wanna get this right so am going to Google the miles from the dealership to the house.....8 yeah i went around the block twice so yeah 8 miles  \\;
IF Harley were to add a safety system, I would like it to be this, and THIS only:
 \\;
IF the kickstand is down, AND the bike is in gear, THEN you have to pull in the clutch to start it. \\; \\;
 \\;
If I remember right, the Police bikes, even in Neutral, kickstand UP, require you to pull in the clutch to start it.
If the answer to everything was the RTFM, then we could just close down this site. \\; Some questions are more obvious than others, but that doesn't make them any less important to the one asking them.
