Any of you guys using the AMSOIL filter? I am using AMSOIL 20w50 in the primary and motor, with the K/N 171 chrome filter. Is the AMSOIL filter better than the K/N. I cannot find out any information about comparisons...
it goes by microns i think the ams oil filter is 8 microns i use harley's filter it is 5 microns. 5 mic= 5000 mile oil change 8 mic= 8000 miles i think, im not 100% positive. But i change mine at 3000 miles either way, these motors being air cooled i just prefer to do it at 3000. hope that helps. oh i use amsoil with my harley filter thats what the local tech carries. he does not carry their filter cuz most people wont go over 5000 miles for an oil change anyway.
A micron is a form of measurement. It is used here in describing filter media porosity in determining the size of the particles the filter will prevent passing thru and thus capturing in the filter media.
A micron is equal to .00004 inch. A HD filter rated at 5 microns will capture a particle approximately .0002 inch. This is equivilent to 1/20th of a human hair which is about .004 inch diameter.
A micron is one millionth of a meter, or 1/1000 of a millimeter, or 0.00003937 inch. \\;In other words, very small! Human hair ranges from 17 to 181 microns in diameter, depending on its colour, the age of the person, and all sorts of parameters. So a 5 micron filter will filter out particles bigger than 5 microns, and an 8 micron filter... well, you get the picture.
