I'm having the same issues with my 2007 Ultra. Volume just cuts off. I have to shot the radio off then back on. Sometimes that will last for 20 mins abd sometimes for hours.
Any one have this issue? I believe it's in the radio.
The audio cutting out problem is not uncommon. Unfortunately, it's pretty hard to isolate because it's usually vibration related. If you pull the unit and give it to a repair shop without the right experience, they will miss it because all values will measure correct. The best shop I've found to this point is a little place in NJ called Iron Cross Audio (www.ironcrossaudio.com) They have been working on the Harman Kardon unit for local owners and dealers in NJ for years and are actually in the process of gonig national. They can be reached at info@ironcrossaudio.com. The entire staff is supposed to be former Harman techs. When thay got my unit it had display issues, audio cut out, and a broken CD door. Unit was on it's way back in 3 days with all issues addressed and a 6 month warranty. All for only $250.
My HARMAN KARDON on my 2006 SG quit any sound out put, all the functions work on the face but NO SOUND, I took it to a car audio dealer, we pulled the batwing and he checked the unit no out put. The HD dealer said I would have to send it in for a exchange at a cost of about $300.00. NO THANKS.
Out of warranty of course.
I purchased the Sony set up and harness kit from Biketronics, I installed this today. WHAT A GREAT SOUND, the folks at Biketronics are very helpful and are great to work with, COST $365.00. shipped with rain cover.
My radio ignores the volume down button on the handlebar and on the tourpac sometimes. When it acts up, I can turn the volume up, but not down. I don't believe it's the switch because I can't turn the volume down with either switch control. Of course, when I take it in, it works fine. Also, how many of you have a hard time seeing the display at night? Mine seems to be kind of faint, even with the contrast/display all the way up.
What have you found?? I have reverse problem in that vol won't go up, just down and now is stuck on mute. It wouldn't be a short else it wouldn't work at all. It does the same thing in the bass, tremble mode. Any help would be appreciated. So far I've loosen the switch housing and handle bar clamp and wiggled the wires, disconnected the battery for an hour and sprayed electric cleanner in the switch.
could still be a short. The up and down circuit have one common wire and 2 discreet. So the "up" circuit could be shorted (or open). Could also be the unit. Both those circuits have an electronic over stress protector. if the switch or wiring experienced any sort of current surge from a momentary short, usually from water, it may have popped the diode.

Thanks,
No water on bike is some time. I did try to hook up an ipod w aux wire and then is when this started. I had it do it last fall but then it started working again after I used elect spray. The radio switched back to radio when i took the aux wire out so it shouldn't be looking for vol fr the ipod? I guess I'll pull the fairing and disconnect and clean everything.
Edit: Can the average person change the diode and is the a way to check this, where is it located in the radio??
I have an 07 and the sound just shuts off,I turn the radio off then back on it will work for a while then shut off again, maybe 10 miles or 100 miles.I took it to the dealer cause my warranty was going to run out, they said they put the new download in it and adjusted the fairing ,they said the radio was hitting the handle bar risers, they said it was fixed,I asked them what if it still shuts off after i ride for a while, they said they cant warranty the radio cause i have a hogtunes amp and speakers,Well to get to the point to my surprise it worked for about two weeks now its doing it again so I'm going to upgrade to an after market radio F%$C IT!! they are junk and my dealer wont help me.
yep same deal with my 09...bike is 8 months old and the dealer is working up warrenty crap with the MoCo...I'm going to HawgWired and running an after market set-up...The factory unit is not very good to begin with and now that it's giving me trouble...It's outa here...It's a shame the bike wasn't available without a sound system...would have loved to save the thousand bucks on MSRP...20k doesn't get you much these days
What happenned to my radio was that the screen went blank I had sound everything worked but I could not see anything.
The SVC mgr at my local dealer did a "Goodwill" warranty on it since my bike was out by a month and so far so good. If it happens again I will be gutting an aftermarket sony unit.
