I have a great idea lets put a thermometer close to a hot engine [you know one that is air cooled and has no radiator or internal cooling system] and close to the hot asphalt you've been riding on for six hours and see how long it takes for the little suckers to start blowing up. LOL
why the uFck would I want a compass in my bike? Must be the Florida guys starting this idea. The damn road goes where it goes and it doesn't care about the magnetic heading. What, you gonna steer a course instead of following the road??!?
any body have an idea why i need to know the ambient tempature (gauge on the dash) on my streetglide..........
season your words well, one day you may have to eat them \\; =)
It's not really ambient temperature, per se, but ambient temperature inside your fairing. Thus, when the sun is out you'll see 20° higher temps than if it is cloudy. So to determine ambient temperature you'd need a light meter to figure the amount of sunlight hitting the fairing, then factor that into the temperature given by the gauge. Now, what is this good for? It's to **** you off enough to buy their oil-temp gauge, so they'll get you for another $140. This is a very useful gauge to have. BTW, if you buy it, don't get the extra oil-filter adapter kit, optional for '07< bikes. Instead, mount the sender in the oil pan, as per many tutorials on this here in this forum.
Never liked it and as soon as I am ready to start my winter projects on the bike that gauge is the first to go. I will be installing a oil temp, it may actually come in handy someday.
I was using the oil dip stick LED unit until I went to change the oil and the top chrome piece pulled off, took it back to HD and they said that they couldn't take it back because it was the old model, even though the new ones looked exactly the same as mine. They probably just glued the top chrome piece on better!
So that was a $130 lesson...same thing happened to my brothers, so if you were thinking about getting one I wouldn't suggest it, but if you insist, I know where you can get a good deal on one that has a removable cap for easy cleaning...LOL

If you live in Florida where there are five roads that go east and west and north and south then you don't need a compass cause no matter where you are you will see a sign that says Georgia or hit water.
If you rode your motorcycle like maybe to Acapulco, Mexico some of those mountain roads in Mexico are not well marked and if you actually wanted to come back to the USA as oppossed to going to Venezuala a compass is a good idea when there is no GPS available.
Wait - lets see you are a retired millionare and you just get on and ride and ride and ride and ride and never have to return - that's cool in the US where all the roads going east and west are even numbers and the ones going north and south are odd numbers. Ever ride outside the Country?
Never understood why the MOCO thought I needed to know the temp of the radio stack.
Yanked it and put in the oil temp gauge w/ sender in oil sump. Works well. Put one of the quarter sized liquid filled thermometers on the right grip, much more accurate.
