I had my 08SG in for service Monday. While it was there they informed me about the recall and told me the parts were not there yet. I said I didn't need the bike back till Friday and it was no big deal to leave it. They called me back on Tuesday night to tell me they couldn't do the recall fix because I had not purchased the bike from them. It seems that the first round of this fix will be tied to the dealer of purchase for the bike you bought. I have all my service done else where because I have been going to them for close to 10 years. Never the less I had to take the bike home and call the dealer I bought it from . They told me the parts were not in yet but they took my name and # and told me I was on the list. They would call me when the parts hit the door. The other dealer told me they would be happy to do the repair but the first wave of parts are allocated to the bikes sold by the respective dealer.
Go figure. You would think Harley Is Harley. Where you got it shouldn't matter as far as I am concerned.
Call Harley Davidson customer service, what that dealer told you is complete BS. You can take your bike into any dealer world wide and they will honor it.
That dealer is full of crap. They need to be reported to H-D and you can also put a report on http://stealer-dealer.com. Dealers like that need to be straightened out. The best way is to let them know that business is going elsewhere.
I got the recall notice on mine. I already had the parts (just in case). They opened up the tank and pulled the shell and discovered that the actual item number on the canister was in a sequence after the the conversion. In other words, if your bike was built late in the campaign timeframe, it may turn out that it had already switched to the new version. The recall notice indicates your bike "may" be defective.

I haven't received my recall yet but I wasn't going to wait for my bike to crap out on the road and leave me stranded so I ordered the part myself (~$40 CDN). It took about 3 weeks to arrive (back ordered). When I went to install it, I found out the old part was already the improved version. Apparently H-D realized the filter shell was deficient by the time my bike was built. Now I have a spare, which won't be with me if/when I need it anyway. Oh well, better safe than sorry.
My '08 FLHTC was built in Sept'07 and is identified as a bike for the canister recall. My dealer showed me a MOCO document that says only specific build dates of the CANISTER will be replaced. So they are saying that just because my bike was built in '07 and just because it has the old canister; does NOT mean my particular canister will be replaced with the improved part.
So they are going to go through the labour of taking the thing apart - take a look at the canister and depending on the date the actual canister was built - not change it! I told them just replace the damn thing with the new part and I will buy the cheap plastic canister.
I mean what does it really cost the MOCO for this piece of plastic... $5?
Now tell me HD is not cutting corners wherever they can!
I got my letter earlier this week, but had already replaced the canister myself, I just didn't want to take a chance. My bike was built in Sept. 07 and had the old canister, although it wasn't in bad shape and had no sign of cracks, I replaced it anyway. I will check and see if the dealer will refund the cost of the canister, but am not really worried about it.
I work at a dealership and have ordered the new style filter shell a couple of weeks ago and have been repairing those with need it to keep their mc running. Now that the recall is offical, I started a running list for those who have called and whose needs are not immediate. Hopefully the part will be in by the time I get back to work on Friday. I hate it when the MOCO release a recall without have the part available at the dealership. Hang in there, they will be here soon. If you have an immediate need, insist that they order the revised fuel filter shell to get your mc on the road.
The quality dealers with integrity and service in mind will rise to the top. They are the majority. Support them and avoid the others. My dealer has always bent over backwards to take care of me and I appreciate it as will others.
