last week i was comming home after 9 pm on a dark highway, high beems on ,approx 58 mph ,looking for deer (its that kind of hwy) and a black bear runs right out in front of me and i hit it (i think in the rear leg) next thing i know im up over the fairing looking at the head light. there's a gap from there until i was sliding down the road backwards trying to stop myself with my hands and arms. right after impact the lite went out and the engine shut off and i landed on the hwy with the bike (03 flht)sliding away from me all i saw was the sparks and heard the bike crashing down the road (i think it barrel rolled a couple times). i know the big guy was with me its amazing how me and the bike seperatedand all i got was road rash on both arms and hands ,and 5 stiches on the back of my hand. the bike is a mess the ins co don't know if there going to fix it or total it,its a woman adjuster and i just don't know if she knows a whole lot about bikes(i didn't get that impression).i'm just glad that i'm ok and i have another bike that i'll probably be able to ride next week .does any body know how they figure out if it is totaled or not?
Musky,
Glad your okay. Sounds like it could have been much worse. Were you wearing leather jacket, chaps, gloves, helmet etc.?
This year in the Banff Alberta area there has been 2 bears that I know of that ended thier lives by running out in front of bikes. One was a grizzly that ran out in front of a Harley(The news report said the rider said it felt like hitting a brick wall.), the other was a black bear. Both riders survived - bikes and bears didn't.
I looked for the news links to post with this reply but I couldn't find any good examples.
Most insurance companies do not know how to estimate a bike and will tell you so. The dealer will give you a quote, you can call the adjuster and have them meet you there to go over the quote. 75% of the value (kbb) is the magic number to total the bike. But that is not set in stone either. If it is close, start talking about filing a deminished value claim. They may go ahead and total it. That is how it worked for us dealing with State Farm.
Wow! I am sure glad you're ok!!! Sorry to hear about your ride I gotta, say that is one helluva story! Thanks for sharing. I hope you get a brand new '09 outta this.

Hope you have a speedy recovery.
thank you i'm recovering great ( i heal fast)ready to ride my 93fxdwg this week, and all i had on was t-shirt (short sleeve) jeans and ankle boots half helmet (dot)clear saftey glasses . If i was wearing gloves and my leather jacket i probably would'nt have road rash on my hand and arms and nobody would believe i was in a wreck, the jeans were tore apart on my right cheek and knee one little scrape on my knee and scuff on left boot
