That's a wonderful snapshot of the exhaust port. I would like to see one just like it only with the exhaust valve at full open, so I could see what the stem looks like in its guided area.

Another point regarding the fume smell, that is a byproduct of riding a m/c especially if your in a pack and breathing the exhaust of those in front of you, or just the road draft and the soot/matter clings to you (look at the back of your car, while the frt and sides stay clean, the back has all film on it) So I would say if you smell something most likely it is not you.

he said he was leading the pack when this was noticed. just yesterday i was kinda freaking out, i started smelling burnt oil and i was riding alone, the car in front wasn't smoking, so for about 15 miles i kept trying to check if it was me, finally found the problem, it was the car in front of the one ahead of me....WHEW!
black smoke gas, blue oil.

I guess my point was if you can smell fumes chances are it is from something in front of you.I have been on an open mtn road on a clear day and being aware of my surroundings I smelled hot brakes, I thought it was me having a dragging brake or something. But after pulling over the brakes were cold. So it was a car that was in front, same with fumes, cars could have left the trail to smell. I know that from breathing exhaust (aka particulate matter) the smell lingers because it clings to your nose hairs and it stays with you. Learned that from experience and my haz mat certification classes.

Thats a valid point but I know it's coming from my bike. All I have to do is let off the throttle and let the bike decell and it's there instantly.

I'm using oil and there are no real visible signs in the exhaust ports.

I talked to Steve at GMR Performance and he said that it could very well be on the intake side in the valve seals.

If it wasn't for the fact that I used a half a quart of oil in the last 700 miles I'd probably look farther into a fuel issue.

I think I'm going to tear it down and do a big bire kit. I have 17,000 miles now and the tensioners need looked at anyway.

I just need to decide what big bore kit to do.

GMR has a 98 kit that I like the best so far. His price is way better than HQ and he seems more dedicated to customer service than anyone I've talked to.

I need to do some more research before I pull the trigger.
