Starter Problem
Again, I come to this forum seeking advice and assistance.
I owned a 2003 FLHT standard with a stage 2 upgrade - pistons, cams, adjustable pushrods, Screamin’ eagle ignition module, etc.
Over the past 3 years, I've put 3 new starters in the bike. The last time, I had to replace the starter, outer clutch and pinion gear.
I know a lot of other Harley owner's with "boosted" bikes, and none of them seem to encounter the same starter problems as I’m having.
There are times when starting the bike I get a very loud "crack" as if the compression/spark is forcing the starter backwards. There are also times when the starter "goes quiet" and I wait about a 1/2 of a sec. for the current to force the starter to turn.
I’ve been told that this is an ignition problem, the ignition being too far advanced. Yet, the module that I have installed does not allow any adjustments.
Could you offer me some advice as to what I should do to correct this problem?
Thanks
G
If it were me, I'd think of replacing the stock starter with a 1.4kw starter. Stock is .7kw I believe. Make sure you have good clean cables and connections as well.
Ignition timing can cause it to seem like it is dragging too, but in this case I would think that that is not the issue. Of course the only way to be sure is to check the timing.
