Your not the only one looking at the new BMWs or considering a Wing. Getting too old to constantly work on Milwaukee iron. I have had very few problems but a change is in the air. I find January is the best month to buy.
well, now I think I've heard it all. my dealer called yesterday to say my bike should be ready today, then called me back at 5:30 to say they had the wrong oil pump and were hoping to get one overnight "red flag" from Harley! now as best I can figure the 96 engine has been around a while and I would think one oil pump would be the same on all 96"s? Ann at Harley never called back as she said she would to give me an update on the home office's opinion on my present situation and she would also see if Harley would comp more than $100 worth of merchandise BIG DEAL!! with their mark up thats like buying me a beer at Hooters (minus the babes) I am so pleased with my whole Harley experience I want to tell everyone all about it and will give my advise as to where to spend their hard earned money when they go to buy a new motorcycle.
I would push for a new motor not a F$#@'n rebuild.
Agreed there is an article in American Iron this month about a guy who get a rebuilt motor from the factory and had nothing but trouble.
If it was done at the factory I doubt you would make 20k. Ill bet your stealer dropped it in there during service or as suggested the AC was not tightened done properly. Did you have the 20k service done before it happened?
You can drive yourself crazy trying to pin point where that bolt came from and letting your frustrations get the best of you. 1)hopefully its under warranty 2)they fix it right 3) and when they do and you get it back it should be warrantied so I would reccomend ridng **** out it.
The whole thing sux. Thats why I guess some have a second bike but I can tell you sometimes everything I own that is mechanical breaks down at the same time. from the lawn mower to the truck and everything in between.
I haven't had the 20k service done yet, I was going to take in right after our weekend trip to the blue ridge parkway.I don't wrench on my bike at all and have a service contract with my dealer. I wasn't involved in the decision on what the correct choice of repair should be and was told what they were doing after the fact. I still have no idea when they will have my bike ready but all of this has sure soured my opinion of Harley as a company
Another thought.....once they are done with the repair consider what you can do about trading it in for an '09? Every vehicle company spits out a lemon every now and then for what ever reason.
I had a 2002 SUV and when it only had 65000 miles on it things started happening. Manifold cracked, dash lites went out. Transmission went south. All under warranty for now. Either way once I had them fixed and to my wifes annoyance I traded it in. My wife was pissed. But guess what someone I work with bought it from them and the whole car went belly up shortly after he purchasing it. He had no warranty. It was a hunch and a gamble that paid off. My wife nagged me to keep it because she thought that all the rpoblems were fixed. In fact they were just beginnng.
So you may want to consider distancing yourself from this particular bike. HD's are great but not without thre problems from time to time.
Pretty weird conclusion on that errant bolt destroying your engine. I'll bet you're glad you bought the service contract. They are left without excuse.
Based on my experience with the 02 and its cam chain tensioner problems, which I had to deal with, I too bought the service contract plus 3 year extended warranty. Buys a lot of peace of mind. The service contract is a great deal. I got $1900 worth of service and parts for $1000 in the first year. Good luck on getting some satisfaction.
Don't switch to BMW because you think your HD is a lemon. Go to i-bmw or other bmw forums and read into the air box issues among other things... I know, I've had two. My '02 K1200RS was a complete POS that stranded me multiple times. My '04 K1200GT was a great piece of machinery that was very fast and reliable. It's the luck of the draw...
At least you're getting the bike repaired under warranty. HD makes a good product, but people are the ones putting them together and servicing them. Humans make mistakes. Move on and enjoy your ride when you get it back...
I got my bike back, the service manager and the tech that worked on my bike met with me and explained what they had done to fix it. new cylinders crank shaft oil pump and one valve that was replaced due to being bent. no head work, nothing on the cam shafts or chain. Harley gave me $ 150 in credit matched by the dealer they also paid the towing fee. Harley blamed the dealer for delays the dealer blamed Harley for being slow sending parts. any way I have my ride back and will buy the 5 year extended warranty. the bike just rides so good. If I have more trouble I'lll scream lemon law and get a lawyer involved I hope that doesn't happen but I put 1.5 to 2.5 k on this ride per month so it has to be dependable
