I still have no idea when they will have my bike ready but all of this has sure soured my opinion of Harley as a company
i dunno, maybe its just me, but something (a bolt) lunched your engine, hd is rebuilding it at no cost to you (after all, they could argue that you did something to drop a bolt in there, while you could claim 'no wrenchie, no wrenchie' all day long) and you are saying your opinion is 'soured'. i know it sucks to be without a bike, and right now, nothing short of them handing a new bike over to you is gonna make you happy, but really, it sounds like they are doing you right.
***edit- okay, posted this before getting to the end of the thread... glad you got your bike back, and i could find a few things to buy for 300 bucks.***
If you get a BMW then you REALLY have to wait for parts and repair! Plus, when did us Harley owners start turnin into such whiners? Suck it up and wait on your bike to be fixed...it's not like the dealer is TRYING to screw you or make you wait...geezzzzz. ( No insult intended )
Ok, see now you got it back...congrats.

Reliablity is a relative term. After putting 150K on Harleys I decided it was time for a change. Even tho the only repairs in 150K were 2 stators and never stranded. I don't pamper my bikes but I do thorough maintenance. Tried the Wing and was little too much like driving a car. Always liked the BMW's so I bought a couple. First was a Boxer twin, fun bike till the shaft drive failed- fixed it myself and still cost $1000--dealer wanted $2000. So I went to a new LT and the bike is nice but still a little to refined-actually liked the Boxer motor better. Repairs---WHOLLY COW man the cost of repair parts and long wait as nothing is ever in stock. Lets see 2005 K1200LT- In 34K miles I lost the slave seal and took out the clutch. $1700 if not under warranty- Went thru 2 drive motors on the center stand. $1500 each if not under warranty. ABS computer/pump/servos had numerous intermittent failures---$2400 out of warranty. The last straw was the final drive failure-I had enough and sold it at a discount as it was still under warranty (3YR 36K) and the buyer had a good dealer to make the repairs. Only 2 dealers in the state and my repairs where always 3-4 weeks minimum. I never met arrogant motorcyclists until I went to some BMW rallies. Sorry for the rant but felt this reliability issue diserved some balance.----Rethy
Have you had your bike serviced recently? No one will admit to it after the fact, but I have seen Techs put a rag in the Spark Plug Holes if they take the plugs out during service, this keeps foriegn objects from getting into the engine. It is possible that an object, wrapped up in the rag could go unseen and fall into the engine if one wasn't careful.
I find the entire episode suspect. First they tell you that some mysterious bolt, that nobody has any idea of where it came from gets stuck in one of your valves. That would indicate to me that someone was working on your bike shortly before the foreign object was ingested. They either left something loose, or the bolt just fell in either through the spark plug hole, or through the intake......that's just too strange to just happen out of the blue.
Then the service manager tells you that your engine is all done, but they are waiting on a friggen wrist pin cir-clips. That is a part that you could find IN STOCK at just about ANY place that wrenches on H-D's. Hell....chances are I have a dozen or so laying around in the junk draw of my tool box!
Then they start trying to lay off the blame on the MOCO for a delay in parts getting there......parts that any COMPETENT dealer parts dept HAS IN STOCK.
Then comes the lame *** "wrong oil pump" story.......that is just too stupid to even comment on.
I could go on....but what for? I dont blame you for getting pissed off.....but you should be pissed at your dealer and not the MOCO in this situation. Look.....if I was you I would get my bike out of there ASAP, and never look back. Cash in that service contract or see if it can be used at another dealer service dept........sorry to say you would probably get better service at, and get your bike back faster if you had brought it to a friggen Jiffy Lube to get it fixed!
guess what? got the bike on the road 500 miles babying it so the new rings can seat. well the last couple of days when I stop to fuel up and the bike has sat for 5 to 10 minutes and I start it up heres what happens, I wait for the engine symbol to go out, start the bike, it fires right up the idle slows to appx 950 in about 2 seconds the engine symbol comes back on and stays on about as long as during start up. Dealer said to stop by and they would run a diagnostic on it. so my next day off that they are open I'll ride up there. I have no idea what wrong with it but I have seen a drop in mileage. is a drop in mileage to be expected during break in of new rings? I will keep posting as things go on
Hey I can completely relate to having to wait for repairs. I was recently indoctrinated to that experiance. And like you, I found myself using these forums to vent my frustrations and look for advice. Unfortunatley there are members in here that like to kick you when your down for complaining and then brag that they have so many miles on their own bikes without a single problem. Ignore those folks. For me, getting my first Harley was better than the first time I got laid. Give me the very best p--sy I have ever had, than take it away and tell me I cant have it back for several weeks. God dam right I am going to bitch.
Good luck with your bike, I know how much it sucks when its down. Its ironic, if we didnt miss the dam thing so f--king much than we would not be so pissed off at the world when its down. Its when you can take it all in stride is when you should question your love for HD.
Hoffy thanks for the support, I don't mean to be a whiner but when you feel like your being bs'ed it's hard not to be that way. I think what happened is that my regular mechanic was off when I last got the bike serviced and the guy just didn't tighten a bolt on the air intake any way master mechanic Eric did the rebuild my handle bars had to be reajusted after the gave it back to me (the tow truck had pulled them down during transport. Eric said he had to pull the cowling off to fix it Steve (my regular mechanic) said no just lull the fork lock and lower radio cover which he did and had it all done in 10 minutes.
