Default Good deal or not?

I was stationed in Hawaii and after riding jap bikes for 15 years I decided to get a Harley when I came back to the mainland. I looked online and Barnett HD in El Paso had a good site and the bike I wanted. I picked out a 97 Ultra and asked the salesman if it would stand up to long rides when I got back to Texas. I will be stationed in San Antonio and my wife will be in Abilene so I will be riding about 500 miles a weekend. He assured me the bike was in great shape and i would have no problems. I bought the bike and used their fly and ride program to fly out to pick it up. 140 miles east of el paso a module blew (controls the fuel injection). So I sat in 100 degree heat and waited 2 hours for a tow truck. Robs Towing in El Paso is a great guy and has a cool rig that folds down on the ground to load your bike then folds back into the truck bed.
Any way they said the part was not made anymore and the only place they could find it was France. They said for just a little more a month I could get a new bike. So I now have a 2008 Electra Glide Classic which is great but I am wondering if I got rooked or not. They took good care of me even though the bike was not under warrenty but I still had to stay an extra day in El paso and my payment is now 100 dollars more than I wanted.

i find it hard to beleive a part only 10m yrs old cant be found when there are parts for pans and shovels readily available. as for the payments that was a decision you made. one should never borrow money for toys. just my .02

You had a 1997.....88 ci.
Now you have a 10 year newer, with a bigger engine to
boot. If you can swing the extra $100 a month, sounds
good to me.
I had a friend that had a similar situation. Riding
from NY to Sturgis on a Dynawide....His cam bearings
went to crap. He limped into a shop and he was told
the bike could be repaired in a few days (that he didn't have).
They traded it for a Classic. Kind of hard to get a good deal
on a bike you towed in.
You will enjoy you newer bike.
(Oh.....thanks for serving)

If you can afford the payment you did the right thing. Shouldn't have any trouble with an new bike on long rides. What's peace of mind worth to you?

You didn't say what you paid. Barnett's is known world wide for it's price gouging, so it depends on what you paid as to whether you made a good deal or not.

I don't think you got "rooked" - at least not on purpose. Any salesman is going to assure you that your investment is solid - but, the fact of the matter is - they have no idea and are hoping for the best. Car & bike dealerships can do all the 120 point inspections they want, and still miss pieces that are worn from age (or possibly abuse). In this case, getting an 11 year old bike, I would've made sure they offered some type of warranty - knowing the type of distances you'll be putting on it on a regular basis - or, have opted for a newer bike - since chances are, they will only sell something like that "as-is".

The other thing to note is the '97 was one of the first years HD used fuel injection, if my memory services me correct - and it wasn't the best setup of parts/configuration - so there were problems as they used this "new" technology. I can believe the part is hard to locate. I'm pretty sure it was the lesser used M&M EFI system, as opposed to the more popular Delphi system that was used beginning in 2002.

At any rate- from the sounds of it - if you're only paying $100 a month more - and have an '08 - you probably got a pretty good deal. If I was the salesman, I would've tried to have talked you into that from the get go - just based on the reliability and the lenghth of your regular travels that you mentioned. Now you've got a full warranty - and the peace of mind knowing you're the original owner of a solid bike.
