Default Steering head grease fitting on 07 FLTR

Major disassembly required? My fitting is towards the front of the bike and under a metal bracket that appears to hold the fairing onto the bike. There is only 1/8 inch of space between the bottom of the bracket and the fork tube and there doesn't seem to be any way from the side or top to route a flexible cable in there. Even if I used a 90 degree adapter on a grease gun it would not fit because the fitting is too close to the metal bracket. The dealer's mechanic took a look at it and said "Gee, that looks like it's going to be a PITA to grease that".

I assume it was drilled and installed in the wrong place. Any ideas other than taking apart the entire front end just to get to it? I considered drilling another spot in the steering head and tapping in a new fitting but figure I'd be pushing metal shavings into the steering head. If it was anywhere close to the location as depicted in Figure 2-89 of the 07 Touring Service Manual it would be a piece of cake.

Thanks for any suggestions. I know some folks don't believe any grease has to go in there, but I like to follow the manual anyway.

Can you get to it enough to replace the fitting with one with a 90 degree end on it? That would slove the problem. By the way, it takes a LOT of grease to do it. You have to fill up the neck until it starts to come out the top and bottom. I had one bike that was a real pain to get to. Actuall took two people to do it. Good luck.

Can you get a little 5/16" combination wrench in there to remove the old zerk? I just replaced mine with a 45 degree zerk so I could easily grease mine. The threads are 1/4 x 28. The 45 degree zerk is supposed to be easier to fill the neck vs. a 90 degree zerk in case your interested. If you can't get to it then you'll have to take the outer fairing off, remove your passing lamps, and then remove the chrome metal fork cover to get to it. Not a hard task, just a bit time consuming for a zerk.

I use this and it works without removing anything but is a pain in the *** but combined with the 45 or 90 zerk it will work great.

Thanks guys, using a 45 degree fitting and the hose above I might be able to get at it. I'll still have to take it apart the first time to R&R the fitting but hopefully the rest of the times I have to top it off it won't be as difficult.

I can't believe what a PITA this is, too bad they didn't install it according to their drawing where you could have at least got to it just by moving the handlebars to the right. Wonder how many HD shops would go through all this to grease it?
