I'm looking for a GPS to use on the bike and in the truck. The research shows the zumo is rugged and rain ready even for off road ATV usage hands down.
My question is, how long can a person expect for a garmin Novi Series to last when mounted using the RAM system as long as you don't drop it and keep it out of the rain? I realize you have to sacrifice one thing for another, but I'm just not a fan of the bulky and heavier zumo. Fellow rider experiences pro or con appreciated.
On a lighter side..I was looking at a zumo at a local electronic store ($880.00 yea right!!) and the salesmen tells me how good the zumo is. "If it falls off while riding down the highway you will be OK because the zumo can take it....then he proceeds to tell me...."if you wreck your bike you can be sure the the zumo can handle the crash and keep working" Yea, if a person crashes...they wont have to worry because the zumo can take it.....LOLOLOLOLOLO (although those quadrants could be handy for the rescue services)
I have the Zumo 550 w/XM radio and it works great on both my bike and in my truck. You can do a lot with it and save your favorite rides, find whatever you need like fuel, motels, food, parks, etc. It's easy to get used to them, too easy. Just went on 5,000 mile drive and ride to SD and WY and never got lost!
I opted for the Nuvi 750. When I truly need directions I just switch it on and leave it in my pocket. The 750 has a built in fm transmitter that will broadcast the voice prompts over the bike speakers. It's not waterproof but I see no reason to mount it because the turn by turn ( speaks street names )directions get me to where I need to go. It is also half the price of the Zumo and has a built in GPS receiver.
Went through a fierce rainstorm while the Zumo 550 was on board.
Hail, wind, driving rain, terrible, with no underpass to hide under.
The Zumo worked flawlessly before and after that ordeal.
There is a post stating it is available for $485.00 somewhere.
With Bluetooth, I had the Scala Rider2 and my cell phone all interconnected. While riding I received a call from my wife telling me the weather radar showed a huge storm in my path. We were able to converse while I was traveling 70 MPH. Unfortunately I was already in it when I got the call.

Actually, in my case he was right. I went down in June and the bike slid off the pavement and into a ditch where it flipped. I found my 450 lying in the weeds where it had jarred out of the cradle. I put it back in and it worked fine. In fact, I connected it to my pc when I got home and by checking the trip tracks I found out that I was going 48 mph when I had my unplanned getoff.
My Zumo has brought me to more great restaurants and is easy to use. I also like to ride all day to the middle of nowhere and then find out where the nearest gas station is. Went down roads I never knew existed.
I went to pricegrabber.com to find the best price which at the time was www.buydig.com. Quick delivery and saved hundreds off the Circuit City price.
