Default slip ons

how hard is it to replace the stock mufflers with slip ons? is there any thing special I would need to do? it looks like it would be simple but the last time I thought that (last week) it turned out to be a cluster f---.

Patience!!! Spray lubricant, patience, more spray lub, patience, more spray lub. Honestly, no, just take your time. Do not get in a hurry.

I am definately more monkey than wrench, but I just replaced my stock muffs with Rineharts this past weekend. Took me 30 mins from beginning to end. Just be patient and use lots of WD-40...wiggle...WD-40...wiggle... You will be fine!

It's a real pain in the azz! Once you get settled on one side, you have to take out two bolts, then loosen the muffler clamp. After you jiggle the muffler off, you install the new ones, tighten the clamp, reinstall the two bolts. NOW THE HARD PART! You got to get up, go to the other side and repeat the process.

Like these guys said, piece of cake, easy enough, I recommed Hi-Temp copper sealant also, but it is not a necessity, sort of a safety factor. Once the bags are removed, it is literally three bolts. The hardest part is wiggling the muffler off, sometimes they are a bit stubborn, but a little patience goes a long way.

Spend the extra 10 bucks for new clamps - you'll thank me later.

Pick up one of those rubber strap tension wrenchs, Sears has a set of them for small bucks. If your mufflers have been on a while, do the WD-40 thing and just twist the mufflers using the wrench. My 96 had stock units, so they were on for 13 years or so. A good solid twist with the wrench and they were off.

Get new cramps and make sure that you put them in the right spot on the flanges, towards the end were the cuts are, too close to the muffler body and they dont compress the end and might slide backwards. They won't fall off, the rear bracket under the bags will catch them, they just stick out a bit farther and may leak a little giving you some noise.

They are called "slip-on's" for a reason. Not bang on's. Or "Oh brother you are F****d". They are easy to remove and in stall. Just take your time.As you ride in time you will see tere many things you yoursel can do. In the long run You will be helping your brother Harley riders. Just think how much shop time is taken up with techs installing a chrome cover, when the tech could be putting a primary back together, or something like that.

What everyone else has said... Slip ons are pretty easy to do.

One thing I will add though, I think PB Blaster works better than WD-40.
Get it at Walmart.
