I have the Sampson Caliber 2-1 exhaust on my bike. The dealer installed the pipes before I purchased them so I couldn't tell you too much about installation. Thus far, the pipes look and sound great. I love the way they are routed (almost no posibility of buring your boot on the pipe). No need to call customer service (yet).
OK...I give up. I've done a few searches, but still can't pin down exactly why some folks keep saying "stay away from Samsons," "don't buy Samsons," whenever there is a post asking about slip-ons, etc.
What's up? Do they have a quality control problem, customer service issues, or perfromance short-comings?
I'm thinking about getting some Samson slip-ons for my stock '08 FLHT (with IED's) just to have a little better sound. My friends who do a lot of Harley trike conversions, use Samsons all of the time and have not had any problems with them...or customer complaints.
Am I missing something here? What is allegedly wrong with Samsons?
Sampsons are junk! inferior metal that will crack and snap off on you. I know- it happened to me.
If anyone reading this post buys Samsons...you better check yourself for a lobotomy scar...I never considered any for my HD, but was thinking about a set of ripsaws for my solo scoot, not anymore, I'll keep my Hard Kromes...excellent quality, no problems.
I have Samsons. I bought them through my dealer. My right one turned gold after about 8000 miles. My dealership agreed that it shouldn't have happened and called Samson. Samson would not deal with them. My dealership told Samson that they would foot the cost of the pipe that turned. Samson told them they wouldn't even sell them just one since they are sold in pairs. I finally called Samson and spoke to their customer service tech. I had a long go around on the phone with him and he finally agreed to sell me one but would not deal with the dealership. I had to buy it and my dealer made good on it to me. My dealer ate the cost. Kudos to my dealer but bad marks for Samson. If you read about their pipes, and what their guy told my on the phone, they say if their pipes turn blue it's not their fault but the tuner. To me, if they have to put a disclaimer like that on their pipes, then their is probably a recurring problem with their pipes. I just wish I had read it before I bought the dang things. I like the sound but I'm sure the replacement they sold me will turn a nice gold color too shortly. I will be going with anything but Samson's my next go around.
Same problem -- same pipe. But my decision to move away from the Samson pipes wasn't so much the look as it was the sound. While deep and rich on original install, it seems to get louder as the pipes age, and by the time I got to about 25,000 miles, they were unbearable for long rides. I found I was competing with the radio, wind noise, and pipes -- and resorted to ear plugs. Even so, my ears buzzed for a couple hours after a long ride. I've since replaced the pipes with S/E touring (modified baffles) and can enjoy the radio again, hear my CB and intercom, and don't have to wear the ear plugs. Maybe it goes with age, too, but the "BLAT-BLAT-BLAT" that seemed to evolve from the pipes just got to be too much. JMHO, but to anyone who would like to try out the Samson Rolled Thunder Ovals without a big commitment, they are sitting in my garage -- and if you'll pay the shipping, they can be headed your way... Just PM me or email me and let me know if you are interested......Other than the light golding on the right muff, they are in great condition.
I tried 2 different sets of Samsons om my 03 Fatboy. Both of them had the chrome bubble immediately after I started the engine after install. This is caused by oil on the pipe before the chrome is put on. When you heat the pipe the oil under the chrome heats and turns to vapor and expands. It raises the chrome off the pipe causing a bubble. This is pure quality control. Also both sets of pipes turned colors immediately. The bike was tuned great and my next set of pipe, a stock HD header and SE slipons, worked perfectly.
I have a set of Samson Ovals on my 99 RKC. They sound great and I have had no problems with them, therefore I have not had to deal with the manufacture..
